American Decadence—Part 1 of 4 The Characteristics of an Uncivilized People by Reginald Firehammer In describing the character of the people who dominated the society of the 50s I used words like courtesy, decency, respect, reverence, and dignity. None of these words can be used to describe the last two or three generations except in the negative. Today's society can only be described as discourteous, indecent, disrespectful, irreverent, and; well, there isn't a word that captures what those with no sense of personal dignity truly are, graceless, or despicable, or contemptible, perhaps. I'm not attempting to characterize today's entire population....

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- Health code violations led officials to close the city's only abortion clinic, a state health department spokesman said. State inspectors began conducting a full survey of Alternatives on Pacific Avenue on Monday after they found problems with infection control, documentation and "the facility itself," said Health and Human Services spokesman Tom Slater. An anonymous complaint about change of ownership issues prompted the investigation, which was first reported in Tuesday's editions of The Press of Atlantic City. Slater would not say what the original complaint was about, but said that it was unfounded. Instead, he said, problems...

June 25, 2007 -- A Brooklyn mother and father got the shock of their lives when school officials informed them their brilliant 11-year-old girl was denied admission to an elite public school - solely because she's of Indian descent. "I feel bad because I would have gotten in if I was white," Nikita Rau lamented over her failed bid to attend the Mark Twain School, IS 239, in Coney Island, a magnet school for gifted students. It turns out Mark Twain - unlike all but one other city public school - admits students according to racial quotas established in 1974...

PHOENIX -- Four people have been arrested in connection with kidnapping, assaulting and using a branding iron to burn the word "snitch" on a Mesa woman's face, police said. Investigators said they believe the crime was done in retaliation for reporting one of the men and woman to Child Protective Services in February 2006, which ultimately led to CPS taking away their children. "If CPS removes a child from the house, there must be some very serious allegations," said Sgt. Chuck Trapani of the Mesa Police Department. "So the children removed, they're in CPS custody, and now they're blaming this...

SEATTLE - The firefighters who tried to save 3-year-old Ashley McLellan, unconscious after being pulled from a pool on a winter night in 2003, noticed something strange about her stepfather: He was calm, mostly dry and never once asked them if she would live. She didn't, and Joel Zellmer was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of killing her in an attempt to collect on a $200,000 insurance policy — just one accusation in a string of accidents that investigators say Zellmer concocted to befall the young children of the women he dated. Investigators say Zellmer has a history of dating single...
