EDMONTON - A young Edmonton man who grievously wounded his friend while testing a supposedly “stab-proof” vest was sentenced to six months in jail Tuesday. Court heard that Justin Harder, 18, was bragging to his friend Calvin Wesley Clackson, 21 about a “stab-proof” vest he’d just acquired as they hung out in an apartment suite at 106th Avenue and 116th Street, Crown prosecutor Mark Huyser-Wierenga told court. Harder was so confident in the vest that night in October 2012 that he believed it would deflect any attack with a knife. Harder eagerly invited his friend to stab him in the...

Crews found a pickup truck stuck in a tree almost ten feet off the ground Sunday morning near Sherwood. Firefighters used thermal imaging to scan the truck at Highway 99 and Middleton Road and found it was empty. The details of how the truck got into the tree are a mystery to investigators. They were first alerted to the tree at 7:30 a.m. and called area hospitals, but no trauma patients came in overnight. PGE was at the scene due to safety concerns over power lines near the tree.

CHATTANOOGA — With children and other onlookers holding umbrellas, Sylvester Kitchens stood in the flooded street, laughing and bragging he could swim an overflowing Chattanooga storm ditch outside their house. Wearing shorts and shirtless, the 46-year-old Kitchens dared onlookers to bet him $5 he couldn't do it. Even when nobody showed any money, Kitchens jumped in. After bobbing along in the gushing water about 150 feet late Sunday afternoon and grabbing a chain link fence above the ditch, Kitchens lost his grip as family members tried to toss him the end of a water hose. He washed away into an...

FORT PAYNE, Ala. -- A Georgia man was hospitalized after jumping from the side of Alabama's DeSoto Falls and plunging 150 feet before hitting the water. The leap wasn't a suicide attempt since several witnesses reported that prior to the plunge, the man yelled, "Watch this."

My wife, Gretchen, is fond of saying that my last words on this earth will be something akin to, "hey y'all, hold my beer and watch this!" Well, I have outdone myself once again. No doubt you will see this true story chronicled in a LifeTime movie in the near future. Here goes. Last weekend I spied something at Larry's Pistol and Pawn that tickled my fancy. (Note: Keep in mind that my "fancy" is easily tickled). I bought something really cool for Gretchen. The occasion was our 14th anniversary and I was looking for a little something extra for...

CANBERRA (Reuters) - An Australian phone company is offering customers the chance to blacklist numbers before heading out for a night on the town so they can reduce the risk of making any embarrassing, incoherent late-night calls. A survey of 409 people by Virgin Mobile, a joint venture of The Virgin Group and Optus, found 95 percent made drunk calls. Of those calls, 30 percent were to ex-partners, 19 percent to current partners, and 36 percent to other people, including their bosses. The company also found that 55 percent of those polled would grab for their phone first the next...

Norway's increasing focus on lawbreaking at sea landed a sizeable catch when five people were arrested for smuggling 750 cases of beer on a 25-foot leisure vessel off Arendal. All five were arrested on suspicion of violating customs laws. "We have arrested two persons who were on board the boat. In addition, we have arrested three others whom we believe are connected to the case," said police lawyer Terje Skaar of Arendal police district. Police would not comment what led them to the bust. The cargo of beer, which filled the fishing vessel, was confiscated. The 18,000 cans, plus a...
