British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain held secret talks with Hitler's henchmen to work out ways of making the Nazis look more sympathetic to ordinary Britons, classified documents released last week reveal. The cloak-and-dagger meetings in London came shortly after Chamberlain signed his disastrous appeasement deal with Hitler in Munich in September 1938, declaring 'peace for our time' on his return to Britain. The meetings were held without the knowledge of the Cabinet and Foreign Office. Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax only learned of them later because of an MI5 mole in the German embassy. Two newly-declassified documents show Chamberlain was ready...

Osama bin Laden used women as human shields as American forces fired on him in Pakistan on Sunday, White House counterterrorism adviser John Brennan said. Brennan told reporters at the White House that women were “put in front of him as a shield.” He said that “speaks to, I think, the nature of the individual he was.” One of the women was bin Laden's wife, Brennan said.

Last Friday, at the start of Ramadan, President Obama presided over the White House's annual iftar dinner and made some rather bland remarks about religious freedom. The context, of course, was the controversy over the proposed mosque in Lower Manhattan, which is not, as Obama insisted, about freedom of religion but about religious tolerance. And then, having once again gotten high praise for so very little, he went to bed a panicked man and reached, trembling, some hours later, for a political morning-after pill to take back some of what he had said. Whew, for a moment there he was...

Rep. Weiner lashes out at GOP in fiery floor speechBy Jordan Fabian - 07/30/10 10:37 AM ET Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), who is known for his theatrics on the House floor, ripped Republicans Thursday night for voting against a healthcare bill for 9/11 respondents. The $4.7 billion aid legislation failed to pass the House Thursday night. Under House rules, it required a two-thirds vote to pass because it was placed on the suspension calendar, meaning that no amendments could be added. The procedure is usually used to pass non-controversial bills. Republicans objected to its placement on the suspension calendar, but...

Obama, the Thin-Skinned President1 day ago Peter Wehner Columnist In their book "The Battle for America 2008," Haynes Johnson and Dan Balz wrote this: [Chief political aide David] Axelrod also warned that Obama's confessions of youthful drug use, described in his memoir, Dreams From My Father, would be used against him. "This is more than an unpleasant inconvenience," he wrote. "It goes to your willingness and ability to put up with something you have never experienced on a sustained basis: criticism. At the risk of triggering the very reaction that concerns me, I don't know if you are Muhammad Ali...

Youngstown congressman cancels meeting when protesters appear Wednesday, March 31, 2010 10:02 AM THE (YOUNGSTOWN) VINDICATOR YOUNGSTOWN -- A congressman canceled an informational meeting on the new health care law because of security concerns. Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan scheduled the meeting yesterday in Youngstown but called it off because his office was concerned about inadequate security. About 15 demonstrators, including Tea Party members, had showed up to protest the wide-ranging health care overhaul signed into law last week. Ryan's office says the meeting wasn't intended as a political forum and will be rescheduled.

Dan Riehl checks the President's schedule and learns that Obama's not going to Fort Hood, but rather to Camp David for the weekend. In an update, Dan notes that his predecessor is more sensitive to the situation. Fox Reports GWB and Laura spent a few hours at Fort Hood, no photo ops. Now that's a CIC. Are you kidding me? Camp frickin' David? What, does he have a tee time close by? For heaven's sakes, he's the CIC. And he's taking the weekend off? This guy simply doesn't care. Amid scrutiny from numerous decision makers in the NFL community, Dave Checketts released a statement on Wednesday announcing Rush Limbaugh has been dropped from the group seeking to purchase the St. Louis Rams. When it was revealed Limbaugh was part of the group to buy the Rams last week, several people, including NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, stated their ambivalence with the conservative radio personality having stock in the league. Checketts, also the owner of the St. Louis Blues, has decided to move forward on the bid without Limbaugh in the mix, according to the St. Louis Post- Dispatch, seemingly as...

TWO GOP CONGRESSMEN FROM SC TURN BACK ON REPUBLICAN COLLEAGUE When Rep. Joe Wilson needed his Republican colleagues from South Carolina the most, one was actively working against him and one was nowhere to be found. Rep. Bob Inglis, who represents the very conservative fourth district, sided with leftist Democrats Tuesday and voted in favor of a resolution that rebuked Wilson for yelling “you lie” at President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress last week. Inglis, one of only seven Republicans to vote against Wilson, defended his action prior to the vote. “Joe Wilson apologized to President,” Inglis...

Those of you who watched the beginning of the All Star game last night will have noticed that, when President Obama threw the first pitch, the camera shot was a close-up that made it impossible to see whether his pitch was on target. I found this odd, and so did Andy McCarthy. I'll make an educated guess that this was done at the insistence of the White House to prevent embarrassment in case Obama's pitch was a poor one. To be sure, the White House ultimately could not prevent everyone from seeing a bad pitch (YouTube and all of that),...

Barack Obama's offhand approach to Gordon Brown's Washington visit last week came about because the president has facing exhaustion over America's economic crisis and is unable to focus on foreign affairs, the Sunday Telegraph has been told. Sources close to the White House say Mr Obama and his staff have been "overwhelmed" by the economic meltdown and have voiced concerns that the new president is not getting enough rest. British officials, meanwhile, admit that the White House and US State Department staff were utterly bemused by complaints that the Prime Minister should have been granted full-blown press conference and a...

MOSCOW, March 2 (RIA Novosti) - Washington has told Moscow that Russian help in resolving Iran's nuclear program would make its missile shield plans for Europe unnecessary, a Russian daily said on Monday, citing White House sources. U.S. President Barack Obama made the proposal on Iran in a letter to his Russian counterpart, Dmitry Medvedev, Kommersant said, referring to unidentified U.S. officials. Iran's controversial nuclear program was cited by the U.S. as one of the reasons behind its plans to deploy a missile base in Poland and radar in the Czech Republic. The missile shield has been strongly opposed by...

In the realm of foreign affairs, the first ten days of Barack Obama's administration were a disaster. It's hard to believe that even a foreign policy neophyte like Obama could blunder so badly, on so many fronts, in such a short time. We spent the better part of an hour of today's radio show talking about Obama's serial missteps, which I wrote about here, here and here. If I get time, I'll try to podcast that hour. Among other things, Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the mullahs are beating Obama like a drum. Obama's misguided criticisms of America's policies toward Muslim...

GUANTANAMO BAY NAVAL BASE, Cuba -- Military judges on Wednesday will consider motions by the Obama administration to suspend the Guantanamo war crimes trials for 120 days during a review of the system for prosecuting suspected terrorists. The motions, filed late Tuesday at the direction of President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, will be heard in the cases of five men charged in the Sept. 11 attacks and of Canadian Omar Khadr, who is accused of killing an American soldier with a grenade in Afghanistan in 2002.... snip ...Relatives of victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, who were...

WASHINGTON — Military commanders are drawing up plans for a faster withdrawal of American troops from Iraq in anticipation that President-elect Barack Obama will reject current proposals as too slow, Pentagon and military officials said Wednesday. The new plans would provide alternatives to a timetable drawn up by the top American commanders for Iraq to bring troops home more slowly than Mr. Obama promised during his presidential campaign. Those plans were described to Mr. Obama last month. The officials said that Mr. Obama had not requested the new plans, but that they were being prepared in response to public statements...
