I would buy plants at this late date in most areas . Your milage may vary...
That’s exactly what I’ve been using. (Sam’s Vidalia Vinaigrette) I bought it at one of their cooking demonstrations and then never made the recipe — I think it was a grilled salmon salad. The last time I bought it, I notice that they are packaging it in 2 smaller bottles, rather than the giant container it used to come in. Much easier to handle in the frig. LOL.
I like to use a dollop of it across a bundle of asparagus. I also use it on top of 5 bean salad which is on top of a scoop of cottage cheese. Makes something ordinary extraordinary!
Do you take care of ALL of that? Your church is really lucky to have you and your 1st wife as members. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
The Vidalia Onion Vinaigrette is from Sam’s club. They may possibly also carry it at Wal Mart. Ask Red Devil!
It’s a creamy dressing — sort of sweet — pale yellow in color. Yummy.
Is there a brand name on the vinaigrette bought at Sam’s?
I would have thought so. We are expecting 91 for the next two days. It's 82 today.
I managed to get my zucchini planted yesterday, as well as some flower pots for the deck. I also weeded and planted the flower garden in front of the deck.
I've charged the camera, so I'll try and get some pictures of my progress to post later or tomorrow.
I’ll look for the brand name when I get home. I panicked the last time I bought some because it was in a different package, but it’s the same stuff. And the packaging is more convenient. It’s wonderful and good for lots of things.
The strange thing about temperature is that 2 miles east of us (on the Lake) the temps were in the mid sixties yesterday while we were sweltering in the high nineties! That’s just another version of “Lake Effect”.
It’s another hot one today and I propped up a large piece of cardboard to try to shade my lettuce before I left for work. It’ll probably blow over, but it made me feel better to give them a little shade.
My problem is that I’ll be out of town about 3-4 days at the end of the week, and I don’t want everything to cook while I’m gone. I bought a water timer last week and I’m going to set it to turn on an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening. It’s one of those revolving sprinklers that ratchets around and throws the water a long way, so none of the beds get very much water — that’s why the hour.
I’m going over to HOme Depot this afternoon to look for some material to make a hopp house. I found directions on the Web that sounded easy — 10 ft. lengths of flexible tubing jammed into the corners of the planting boxes and screen fabric stretched over and held in place with those big alligator clips from the office. Of course, a puff of wind with probably collapse the whole thing and nobody will be here to fix it.
hopp=hoop
I used a similar system of timer and two sprinklers when we vacationed before installing a drip system. It worked great for us. I adjusted sprinkler positions several times to get just the right coverage, then adjusted the timer for just the right amount of water, all this few days before leaving. When we arrived home again, we had not lost anything and had plenty of new growth. That timed sprinkler system was just the motivation needed to install our drip system. Now we have no worries when we leave for a while during growing season. And leave, we do!
I haven’t been shading my lettuce. I suppose I should, eh?

Sorry, I can remember my hot link HTML at the moment, so I hope you don't mind copy and paste.
... And in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth and it was fair... then God created Adam to tend to Eve's garden but Adam was a liberal and went on welfare so God created Dennis to tend the gardens and it was good and Dennis spent a lot of his money and manual labor and every Sunday Dennis stood up in Church and played his flute and begged for help and the flute music was good and a few shamed souls starting to show up on Tuesdays and Thursdays and toiled in the crummy soil...
The Church lot is about 40,000 sf and there was nothing but a few plants and lots of grass and weeds that only got mowed when the neighbors complained plus the local yokels were tearing it up with their 4WD rigs. One member donated the money to buy several tons of large quarry rock for the perimeter and Dennis moved them into place mostly by himself and planted more shrubs and perennials and wife and I took on the lawn mowing and and few others joined. At that time there were only 4 hose bibbs around the Church and Dennis had hundreds of feet of garden hose but he had limited water pressure so I suggested we add a new water meter and I installed about 600 feet of 1 inch main line and about 40 hose bibbs then I put every thing on drip and Dennis had sprinklers installed in the lawn. He now has a core group of 3 ladies and 2 other men plus himself and wife and I have stepped back from the hard work but I still maintain the water system and drip lines.
First Wife traded the mowing to do home communion to the home bound and makes sure there are snacks for Fellowship following Sunday Service and a dozen other things. I am not a gardner as much as I am a tinkerer and I am referred to as the Fix it up Chappie. The Church won the annual Keep Eureka Beautiful award and plaque 4 years ago. Only one is given every year...
The Huskers Red will divide well after a year or two. A little fertilizer and you will have penstemon everywhere in a couple of years. I must grow mine in patial shade — sun is just too hot down here.
Veggie wise our lettuce is finishing up. I have zukes and cukes, small but growing. Planted potatoes in the bags just to try it—they are now blooming. The tomatoes are starting to blossom. Peppers are still slow, we need some warmer weather—lots of rain this spring. Cantaloupes were just put out last week so they w/b awhile.
Glad to back on the gardening thread.
Off and on snow showers today :(
Hey... it’s only Memorial Day MC...
Simply amazing. I’m glad you have inspired others to help.
That is why all of my early starts are still indoors. I don’t dare out them out this soon. I remember many years watching the Indy 500 and it was snowing outside.
