Perhaps the worst?
Does anyone have any memories or know anything about it during that period in the 70s?
Movie: The Killing Fields
Amazing what humans can do to their fellow man.
Thank Henry Kissinger.
As a little kid, I vaguely remember seeing on the news reports about the Khmer Rouge taking control of Phnom Penh and, later, Vietnam invading the country. I remember someone half-joking that even the Vietnamese Communists thought the Cambodian Communists were too crazy and intervened to straighten them out.
*** the Khmer Rouge, took control of Cambodia on April 17, 1975.***
I remember California University students having a candle light parade celebrating the fall of South Vietnam and the take over of Cambodia.
When one is making estimates in the millions, it’s hard to be exact. We will never know for sure. But yet more millions murdered in the name of communism.
But we do know they killed a majority of their population. Which was unprecedented.
I’ve read stories that the Khmer Rouge killed people for having glasses, thinking that they were intellectuals, rather than just someone who couldn’t see well without help.
“and his pro-American associates staged a successful coup to depose Prince Sihanouk as head of state. “
Once again.
If I remember correctly the death toll was somewhere between 1.5-3 million people in four years.

A very important part of this history is relevant today. The wonderful UN, who is currently demanding a cease-fire from Israel, didn’t lift a finger to stop the very real genocide in Cambodia. But it gets worse. Pol Pot and his regime was never pursued and prosecuted for obvious crimes against humanity. And, he was allowed to die peacefully, of old age, a free man.
This albatross should be around the UN’s neck until the UN is on the ash heap of history, where it belongs.
In 1968, President Nixon ordered John Kerry into Cambodia, where he spent Christmas being shot at—or so he claims.
“A large proportion of the Cambodian people have mental problems because their family members were lost and their spirits damaged. These factors are one of the major causes of the poverty that plagues Cambodia today.”
i would imagine that the complete eradication of the professional classes, leaving nothing but ignorant, uneducated peasants and the leveling of infrastructure to the stone age level played a bigger part ...
I was in Cambodia a few months back. They are one of the most nicest people I have ever met traveling. Its hard to believe that genocide occurred there. Our guide told us the Khmer Rouge soldiers were not punished. Its like they just wanted to forgive and forget.
Dead Kennedys - Holiday In Cambodia
So, you’ve been to school for a year or two
And you know you’ve seen it all
In daddy’s car, thinkin’ you’ll go far
Back east, your type don’t crawl
Play ethnicky jazz to parade your snazz
On your five-grand stereo
Braggin’ that you know how the n*****s feel cold
And the slums got so much soul
[Pre-Chorus]
It’s time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear
Brace yourself, my dear
[Chorus]
It’s a holiday in Cambodia
It’s tough, kid, but it’s life
It’s a holiday in Cambodia
Don’t forget to pack a wife
[Verse 2]
You’re a star-belly sneech, you suck like a leech
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch so you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you
Well, you’ll work harder with a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake
[Pre-Chorus]
Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son
What you need, my son
[Chorus]
Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people dress in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you’ll kiss ass or crack
[Instrumental break]
Pol Pot
Pol Pot
Pol Pot
Pol Pot
Pol Pot
Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot
Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, it’s a...
[Outro]
Holiday in Cambodia
Where you’ll do what you’re told
A holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul
Pol Pot!
After peace was given a chance in 1975 the Killing Fields of Cambodia began.
Ukraine should take this historical lesson to fight on. If Putin conquers Ukraine blood debts to Russia will be paid with horrific consequences to the Ukrainian people. “Peace” may well be more deadly than the war that preceded it.
Like in 1933 when Stalin murdered millions of Ukrainians:
