Anyone have any Siamese kittens for sale?
Malichi

Posted on 08/17/2002 6:13:58 AM PDT by Malichi

My mother's 14 year old Siamese cat was killed Thursday night by a pack of dogs. Scares me because the cat was locked in a screen porch and the dogs tore through the door to get him. She's really distraught(sp?) and I told her I would try to help her find another one. So come on guys, help me out. Oh, and about the dogs, my Dad's going to take care of them. We figure if dogs are vicious enough to tear through a screen door, my 3 year old might look like easy pickings.

Bleh.

Moving from righteous to worse than the original wrong is easy, but not the right way to handle it. I don't want any more details. I am sorry for your loss. Good luck on finding a new pet, but not on your father's revenge.

I hate hearing of things like this BUT Please Pursue only legal options. Including small claims etc. Don't take revenge personally as it may create more trouble for your Dad and family.

We bred siamese sealpoints and bluepoints years back and still have many running around our house today. They are interesting little critters!

We share in your loss. Hang in there.

You say the cat was 14, if your mother had the cat for 14 years I would wait before "replacements" come in.
One needs time to grieve and give honor to the life that
once was. I lost my cat of 14 years in December of 2001 to a coyote and while I have 5 other cats it is still painful, it took me about six months to even begin to get past the loss. (I have no kids so my animals are my fur-children!) If you go on-line to animalnetwork.com there is an article in their Dogfancy library called "Cry If You Want To" that you may find helpful. Tell Dad to first call Animal Control, maybe they will handle the dogs in a humane manner. My thoughts and prayers are with your mother.

Where do you live? I am sure there are places that have them up for adoption...

I understand how you feel...anyone messes with my "kids", and I roll out the small tactical nukes. All that would be left of the neighbor's dog would be a small smoking shadow.

Personally I would call animal control first. Report the owner (if you know who they are) and keep a loaded gun close at hand in case they come back on your property. Make sure you have a paper trail that these dogs are dangerous. I agree with killing them and for the same reasons that your dad has. If they will break-in to a porch to kill a cat then the likely hood of them going after a human child is pretty high. But you need to cover yourself legally.

My beautiful Tilly who was out on my apartment patio was killed by two huskies. The owners had left their gate open. The only satisfaction I had at the time was that they would never be show dogs again. She managed to shred an ear and damage an eye before they killed her. I did report them to animal control. When they were found roaming lose and killing again (this time a small poodle) they were destroyed.

I will admit to a certain grim sense satisfaction when I heard about it.

You can go to your local animal shelter and find a fine one - it might not be purebred - but you will get a good animal. I'd consider an air rifle for the dogs.

Not meaning to pry, but perhaps your Mom might need some time before being given another kitten.

It is heartbreaking to lose a beloved pet at any age, but what a horrible thing to happen! I cannot imagine how hurt and frightened you and your family must feel.

I hope you contacted authorities and informed them of the incident and that you fear for your child. If those dogs have killed once they will kill again.

Get a new kitten as soon as you are able. I happen to be especially fond of Siamese and, as kittens, they are the best healers of broken hearts. Best of luck and my sincere sympathy on your loss.

Forget about breeders. Rescue a cat destined for death at a shelter.

My favorite cat ever was a "found" cat, too. Looked pathetic when we found it, but turned into a beautiful charmer.

I agree with you. It would just add insult to injury if a famiy member ended up charged with animal cruelty because of their retribution. The incident must be reported and the proper papers kept handy. If the owners are known, it is even possible they will pay for repair to the porch, even if you have to take them to small claims to do it.

Sorry, HOTD... Down South, stray dogs that run across your property are fair game for flying bullets.

... Even if they're from next door and have collars.

This story explains why.

I would assume these dogs are no longer on her property. Of course she would have the right to protect her own when they are under attck. Baited deep sea fish hooks with steak on is sick abuse, not self-defense. I hope her dad gets ahold of his emotions before he does something stupid.

See, dogs are predators. Feeding them kibble from a bowl does not change that. They have instinct and a brain the size of a tangerine. Killing a cat is not a moral issue to the dog, but a natural one. Dogs that did not grow up with cats and have a high prey drive like many working breeds do, will chase and kill small things that move unless taught otherwise.

Prey drive to go after a small animal doesn't necessarily point to an unhealthy mind in a dog. Wanting to shoot a dog that is an immediate threat to your own is not a sign of an unhealthy mind. Wanting to feed the dogs fish hooks IS the sign of an unhealthy mind.

When animals become a moral issue in cases like this it is up to the people involved to be smarter. The owner of those dogs has a problem. He/she needs to keep these dogs contained. Period. If he/she doesn't then they are legally fair game while roaming. But not from revenge. From their threatening acts.

I know the cat was one of the family. Believe me, I know. But that doesn't make it right.... see my reply above?

If something awful does happen, we'll probably hear about it here first in the FR 'Wild Kingdom' forum.
