If New York is the city that never sleeps then how's this for keeping you up at night? It is also sinking.
The Big Apple is gradually going down partly because of the weight of the skyscrapers that make the concrete jungle famous, a new study has found.
The descent makes the metropolis more vulnerable to rising sea levels and coastal flooding caused by climate change, the researchers noted.
The paper, published this month in the Earth's Future journal, sought to estimate how the city's vast infrastructure impacts subsidence.
Subsidence is the sinking of land mass caused by either natural processes such as erosion or human activity like mineral extraction.
The geologists calculated that New York's more than one million buildings added up to a total mass of 1.68 trillion pounds (762 billion kilograms) of downward pressure on the earth.
The report concluded that America's financial capital is sinking at an average rate of one to two millimeters per year.
Some areas built on softer rock or artificial landfill were subsiding as much as four and a half millimeters per year, the study added

can you imagine if it tipped over..
I can’t take any more threads on Chris Christie.
Pardon me
They should look to Denmark for sea gates to push back the seas.
So which is it?
Seas rising or island sinking?
I am from Wisconsin and in the 1990s I was taught that the Great Lakes were drying up and nothing could be done to stop it. Move ahead 25 years and the issue was the rising Lakes and how it would completely erode away many beaches.
Island sinking.
So are apologies owed to Rep. Hank Johnson?
So mass settling is outpacing the rising seas from climate change? Maybe NYC should relocate to Boise, Idaho. Take Washington DC with them. Let the FBI sink out in the swamps around Quantico, in their new Stasi-quarters.
Hopefully Kevin Costner will figure some way out...
I saw this clown interviewed by Lee Goldberg who is a meteorologist here in NY. The engineer completely made a WAG on this. He basically claims he figured out the weight of over 1M buildings, came up with a load and weight number and determined it’s sinking 1mm a year. Total and absolutely useless exercise. But I’m sure he got a government grant to do this.
I just left Manhattan. Seemed the same. Smelled like weed.
It’s good Christie is over on the Jersey side if he moved to NYC it might be the end.
No. Sinking is not ‘tipping over’.
I am still staving off killer bees.
Quick, Somebody call US Representative Hank Johnson !
I thought the reason why almost all of the biggest buildings are where they are because they’re built over granite bedrock. How does that sink?

Hundreds of thousands of tons of buildings on a small island and anyone is surprised it would start sinking? Wow - I’m speechless.
It doesn’t. Don’t let science get in the way of science man.
