Actually, many companies (and universities) use Google Gmail services for their email even though you may not know it on the front end when you see the sender's address.
Why use it? Google is very good at filtering out spam and virus emails. There's also a high delivery rate (i.e. emails sent are less likely to be flagged as spam or otherwise disappear in cyberspace).
