Seems that “Pichhu” means “peak”.
That in itself would make me question the “town” name.
Granted it’s IDed by what “peak” it’s near, but maybe someone could’ve come up with a non-peak name.
As it is, “Huayna” looks worse than “Machu”, and probably sounds worse, too!

I heard they got the name ‘Machu Picchu’ when they asked a local guide the name of the place and just as he was staring to answer, he sneezed. The rest is history.

Probably a good thing Bingham didn't call it Squaw Mountain or Niggardly Peak, or we'd be tearing down statues and rewriting history (one more time). For whatever it's worth, the original "Macho Pischo" sounds fine to me...
