Two Polk County deputy sheriffs were shot and are in intensive care following a confrontation early Saturday with a man parked in Hunt Fountain Park in northwest Lakeland after it had closed.
The gunman, who has not been named, was killed by other deputies who returned fire.
Sheriff Grady Judd said at an early morning news conference that the gunman was aligned with the anti-government “Moorish sovereign citizen” movement that emerged in the 1990s and rejects federal, state and local authority.
Lt. Chad Anderson, 46, was shot once with a bullet that went through his arm and into his chest. Anderson has been with the Polk County Sheriff’s Office for almost 26 years. Judd said he underwent emergency surgery and is in “critical but stable condition in intensive care.”

Another person who bought into the sovereign citizen nonsense.
As a Polkian, a little background: “NW Lakeland” is a bit of a stretch here, the park is on the border of the metro area, though sometime in the next decade that border will move another ten miles or so out. It isn’t where you would expect such an incident to happen, and even if Yogi wouldn’t be surprised, the deceased is not the usual “teen” or “thug.”
Pray for the two in the hospital.
Personal aside: a few weeks ago PCSO came across the street from my home to arrest a felon with a half-loaded gun that someone had called in; six vehicles, a full diversity of deputies, and there was no incident. The last time we had such a hubbub was about ten years ago, someone raced down the street shooting into the air, I helped the deputies find some of the shell casings. PCSO deputies are the most professional and helpful I have ever known, but you don’t want to be their adversary.
Putnam County Sheriff Homer “Gator” DeLoach III (R). is another one......does not tolerate any grabassery in his county.....those who have tried suffered the consequences.

Funny how it always seems to happen in RED states.
Grady is my sheriff, though I have never met him.
In was thinking of those car crashes and the couple stories of women shooting an intruder.
But that works for me.
