WASHINGTON -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein has raised the prospects of another electricity shortage as early as this summer in a letter asking Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to embrace immediate measures to control prices and speed construction of new generating plants.

Among her proposals is that consumer prices charged by the state's three investor-owned utilities, including Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison, be based on their costs rather than the less flexible three-year rate schedule process now used by the California Public Utility Commission.

forcing investor-owned utilities to plan and construct more than enough generating capacity to meet demand forecasts

They think the socialist state has arrived. Despite all Feinstein's gun confiscation laws, it hasn't.

They've got more time than they think. When the economy takes off, the last in line to see it will be California.

Davis is gone now, and they need the issue to use against Bush this summer, so Dianne sent this little note out to preempt any wild talk about "excessive snowpacks". It's a crisis, darn it! People are hurting out here, and it's all George Bush's and Ken Lay's fault!

Use Indian Tribes to build power plants

I wonder if this would really cut the red tape? It's a shame to resort to gimmicks but I'd support anything that works.

So where was Fineswine when the wackos were agitating to shut down Rancho Seco? There was over 900 megawatts of zero-emission capacity thrown away for no good reason, but to satisfy the whims of Luddite wackos. So where was Lady Di? My guess is: cheering on the wackos. After all, they were only trashing an eeevilll newcueler plant (along with the jobs are careers of hundreds of good, honest, taxpaying workers).

Use Indian Tribes to build power plants.

Great idea! There must be some problem with either profit or regulations....

If the economy in CA improves more quickly, we could have an energy shortage again, since nothing has really changed in the supply since 2000 or 2001.
