‘Narcissistic Sovereignty’ Has Kept U.S. from Ratifying U.N. Treaty on Children’s Rights
CNSNews.com ^ | November 24, 2008 | Penny Starr

Advocates for a United Nations treaty on children’s rights blamed American arrogance for it not being ratified by the United States, but critics charge signing onto the Convention on the Rights of the Child could mean international law trumping U.S. state and federal laws and the rights of parents to make decisions about raising and educating their children.

The treaty, adopted by the United Nations on Nov. 20, 1989, has been ratified by 193 countries. The United States and Somalia are the two countries that have not ratified it, groups that support ratification said at a press conference at the Capitol on Thursday.

“It might sound dismissive, but I think it has something to do with what I would call, and some other people call, narcissistic sovereignty,” Harold Cook, a non-governmental organization representative at the U.N. and a fellow with the American Psychological Association, told CNSNews.com.

But critics say national self-determination is at the heart of why the treaty should not be ratified.

“This would be one of the most invasive things we could do as far as the sovereignty of our nation,” Michael Smith, president of the Homeschool Legal Defense Association, told CNSNews.com.

Smith said that if Congress ratifies the treaty, it would give the United Nations authority to object to federal and state laws that it thinks violate the treaty and give Congress the power to pass laws to make the country comply with its tenants – a fact advocates do not deny.

We have become a nation of lemmings.
How I yearn for the days when any American
would have told them to piss off.

And Michael Smith is correct and yes, that’s what they want to do during the O reign and are pushing for this and the ICC and heck yes, it would erode our own sovereignty over our own country and make us EU like with the UN It is scary really. Denmark even has a pending law on circumcision of your male children since female circumcision is not allowed. What if that spread to the governing body of this treaty? And in Germany home schooling is not allowed, what if that spread? And definitely no corporal punishment would be allowed for anything along with the sex ed for your kids at the preschool or kindergarten level like they have in the UK. And while I wonder about religion being taught in school, I don’t want a school telling my child that no God exists either and that’s the kind of thing going through Europe right now.

Hey Harold, show us how well it’s working in all those other 193 countries. When those kids are earning enough under a workable economic system to support the UN without USA support, maybe we can talk.

Tell the UN to piss off. Nothing that the UN can suggest would be good for us.

Don’t let 67 Senators vote for it or we are in the Treaty

About a year ago New Zealand’s Parliament passed a Member’s Bill to remove from the Crimes Act 1961 “reasonable force” as a defense when parents discipline their children.

The net effect is that parents can be criminalized if they correct their children by spanking. That’s right: Assault and Battery charges await.

We were told that this must be done in order to bring us in line with the UN’s Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which New Zealand is apparently a signator.

It was and is a wildly unpopular piece of legislation, made contrary to the wishes of the vast majority of New Zealanders.

America has that to look forward to if you sign this Treaty, I suspect.

"...narcissistic sovereignty..."

The arrogance of these people is stunning. We are absolutely right NOT to be a signatory, and we should not sign off on LOST, and we SHOULD NOT look at court rulings in the Hague, and we should NOT take into account Scottish Law or anything else.

This is OUR country, as crappy as it is right now, and WE have say over what happens in it.

Sadly, I don't think I am in the majority any more.

You’re in the majority by far, but the propaganda won’t tell you that, and the “leaders” don’t care what we think.

...the big push is on, and we have idiots with big egos and little brains or foresight in positions of power. Agreeing to go along with this, and what we knew as a free and capitalistic society, where anyone could succeed in business or personal life, those opportunities will be gone.

Beware of any any social program with the term “Children’s” in it. It will ALWAYS be without you best interests in mind. It is one of the Left’s favorite buzz words, like “environment” or “carbon” or “global warming” or “health”. Their only purpose if to advance the goal of redistribution of wealth and put more power in the hands of socialists.

My guess is, this will be used to ban home schooling and later, they will ban private religious schools (mysteriously, Islamic schools will still be allowed while Christian schools are banned). They will say, every child has an equal right to an education and private schools make this right unequal or some rubbish like that. We will find that every child has the “right” to be taught all about genderbenderism, gay marriage, group marriage, sodomy and perhaps drug use. Algebra? History? Not so much.

Yes, I think there is enough evidence to suggest that you are exactly right - there have been cases worldwide of homeschooling parents being prosecuted merely for homeschooling, and not being particularly extremist otherwise.

If these Senators vote for it, then it’s simply time to march on Washington. There’s no way in Hell I’m turning over my parental authority to international, godless bureaucrats.
