An old-timer here at work is convinced that the Beatles ‘started all this sh**’.

They never really had to work or watch their parents have to work hard just to make ends meet like their parents did.

*sigh* sad to say the boomers were handed the world on a silver platter and when we look around today we see the smoldering remnants of what the greatest generation and their parents (the depression era folks) worked so hard to build.

I find it had to believe myself that the “Greatest Generation” spawned some of the biggest, whiniest, loser, cowards on the face of the earth. Was it the Beatles? Who know? They were even corrupted by Bob Dylan.

That’s as good a theory as any.

I, personally, have decided to blame Elvis.

The 60’s generation was screwed up by the commies of the 40’s generation, who were screwed up by the 20’s commies, who were screwed up by studying 19th century German intellectualism.

IMO, it was an unhappy confluence between:

1. Our inherent human narcissism,

2. A tendency for parents and elders to feed that narcissim, and

3. A society with enough wealth and leisure time for the consequences of such narcissism to be hidden.

I think the second item -- permissiveness by parents and elders -- has its roots in the serial traumatic experiences of the Depression, and the subsequent World War.

better listen up to that oldtimer—ya might just get the straight scoop—yeah the beatles, rock-n-roll, drugs, by then the public schools indoctrination was showing fruits of it doings; still later, not that much later, more of the same and more offspring from hippies and dopers; and with hollyweird and the controlled media in full swing...get the picture....or maybe not—some (maybe even most) are too close to it!

Elvis started it with all that rock and roll stuff. Marlon Brando too. Also James Dean. Looks like it started in the '50's and came to a head in the '60's.

As a baby boomer from the tail end I hope to be the last baby boomer alive so I can feel what it's like to live in a boomer-free world.

from another old-timer - listen to the music of any particular era and you get a flavor of just what is going on at that time - the prevailing culture. The old-timer at work has a valid point.

A music appreciation class many years ago made the point I stated above. One of the periods of time studied was the days of slavery and afterwords in the US. The music of the slaves spoke of hard word but not of cruelty. I don't know how valid the teaching was, but found the concept very interesting.

Hundreds of things. Television allowed kids to adopt a culture their parents neither knew or understood. My dad took me to work with him, but kids weren't welcome at most workplaces. Their primary influences became television and teachers. They developed much more of a herd personality.

The Beatles were part of it, but every time a culture reaches the point where leisure becomes the norm, it decays and falls.

I’m with Tom Wolfe who recently said we lost our country in the 1970’s. When society allowed the ten commandments to be removed from public they took with it the laws that tether man’s conscience. Ever since then the laws of man have been front and center changing with each whim. No rules to follow.
Society tried the golden rule but that became ‘do unto others before they do unto you’. They tried the virtues but greed became good. Reason was replaced with what we have now....moral equivolence or moral relevance. There is nothing in society that is above man now. Nothing to humble man. Nothing to cause man’s head to bow. It’s very sad.

the Greatest Generation

I realize Tom Brokaw wrote a book with this as the title. I think he called it that to sell copies. I think it worked.

I've asked this question before and will again. Greatest at what??? Besides advertising on the cover, no one, including Mr. Brokaw, has any clue what this generation was greatest at. In addition, there really is no reason to believe it was greatest at anything!

Like every other generation in the history of the world, there were role models, and there were bums. I'll wager there isn't a soul reading this who hasn't met some of each in that age group.

Listening to nonsense about "The Greatest Generation" gets to where it makes a thinking person desperately desire to upchuck.

If anyone has evidence that these people were or are better than folks of other generations, I'm all ears.

I don’t know about all that, but the Beatles do suck something fierce.

“Everyone of those neighbors watched out for us and when we stepped out of line, we caught hell (corporal punishment) from the neighbors and no one thought twice about it. What mental trauma over the years was wrought from the discipline of the parents and the neighbors? Perhaps, a generation of nor rules, liberal philosophy and personal self interest? I'd say that generation developed neurosis and fear that fed a lifetime of undiscipline, selfishness and a severe lack of responsiblity.”
___________________________________________________________

All the above corresponded with growth of the economy, mass availability of drugs, the sensational music ???? of rock and roll. Completely spoiled children. The civil rights occurring during this time. The great welfare society, of President Lyndon Johnson, Riots in WATTS. Ca.!, Roe vs Wade ... beginning abortion on demand, huge growth of Television in color yet!, Archie Bunkers TV program, Which is an example of how the youth rejected “the establishment fo their parents”, Charles Manson and his ‘family’. Haight Asbury in San Francisco,, the rage of the Beatles, the mantras of transcendental meditation, etc ... Vietnam, etc., many changes occurred during these years. O and of course Political Correctness began too. Turbulent change. SEX AND DRUGS, COMMUNES, ROCK AND ROLL, WOODSTOCK. I'M SURE I HAVE THINGS OUT THAT WERE ALSO MAJOR.

The fraudulent “Kinsey Report”.
Militant Feminism
The Pill
The rise of McGovern Demos
A very weird obsession with youth

When you consider how the Beatles are worshiped in New England; you have to wonder...

I grew up with the Beatles - they'll always be #1 in my heart. I even have all of the albums and unreleased studio outtakes on CDR's made directl;y from the master studio tapes.

That said, I'm VERY conservative and feel angry & deeply saddened that America has fallen to communism today. Dammm bush forever to hell!
