WASHINGTON, Apr. 1 -- U.S. Sens. John McCain (D-Ariz.) and Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.) have introduced legislation that would authorize all funds necessary and sufficient to complete the construction of fences on the southern border with Mexico, their offices announced today. The bill, S.65, or the American Immigration Act of 2009, would also authorize additional funding for the Department of Homeland Security to train and deploy thousands of new customs and border agents at key border crossings within six to twelve months.

The senators also announced that they will join the Republican Party immediately and that they intend to introduce additional bipartisan legislation over the course of the upcoming year aimed at strengthening national defense, reducing the size of government, banning abortions, and regulating professional boxing.

When asked about the two Democrats' decisions to jump ship for the Republican Party, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.) expressed feelings of remorse at McCain's and Kennedy's departure.

"We certainly will miss them," Reid said, "especially as we continue our mission of restoring the American capitalist economy, defeating Islamic terrorism worldwide, and standing tall in defense of the American Republic."
