I could be wrong, but Michael Medved says that Christmas was celebrated in the 1700s, but it was not as "big of a deal" as it became in the 1800s.
And I had a Jewish friend who told me that Hannukah was considered a "minor" holiday until Christmas hit the big time.

afraidfortherepublic, and thanks for the ping! I visited Mount Vernon on Christmas morning 12 years ago and it was well worth it...they went over many of the items mentioned in this article, as the table was set for Christmas dinner (with models of the food in place).
