Pennsylvania governor says collapsed I-95 will reopen within 2 weeks

Justin Klawans, Staff writer Sun, June 18, 2023

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro (D) said Saturday that the collapsed portion of the I-95 interstate in Philadelphia will be reopened in the next two weeks.

Shapiro "[stated] with confidence" during a press briefing that the project would be finished in the next 14 days. He added that Philadelphia was "going to get traffic moving again thanks to the extraordinary work that is going on here by these union trade workers."

The collapse occurred on June 11 after a tanker truck caught fire underneath an elevated section of the interstate. The tanker was carrying around 8,500 gallons of gasoline, USA Today reported, and the heat caused a portion of the interstate to crumble.

The I-95 is a major artery for the Northeast, with an estimated 160,000 vehicles a day traveling on the road every day, according to WUSA-TV. However, Shapiro remained optimistic about the timeline, and USA Today reported that the interstate is being reconstructed using 2,000 tons of glass to fill in the collapsed section.

USA Today reported that the interstate is being reconstructed using 2,000 tons of glass to fill in the collapsed section.

This reference to glass intrigued me and then I saw another source that said it was more like styrafoam from a single use cooler.

Indeed, there is a product called Foam Glass Gravel: Foam glass gravel is a lightweight, thermally insulating bulk aggregate made from recycled glass. The low unit weight paired with high compressive strength and insulation properties make Glavel an ideal solution for lightweight fill applications across the construction industry. Since foam glass gravel is manufactured from post-consumer recycled glass, it’s non-leaching, rot and pest resistant, and fire resistant.

Current challenges in the construction and civil engineering world require durable yet sustainable solutions. Foam glass gravel addresses these challenges and eliminates the need for quarried aggregate or rigid foam board on job sites.

It is manafactured in Essex Vermont, where we lived in when I was born (we moved to another state soon after and I have rarely been back to VT).

Turns out it is actually coming from this company: AeroAggregates of North America, LLC https://www.aeroaggna.com/ Their stuff is gray.

How it is made:

Open in just a couple weeks?

How long before it collapses?

Pennsylvania Ping!

Please ping me with articles of interest.

FReepmail me to be added to the list.

Anyone else notice how major infrastructure failures/bridge collapses happen right before major Biden events?

Can you say, "Forbes Avenue Viaduct"?

I knew you could.

“Open in just a couple weeks?”

A few years back there was a similar event in Florida on I-75. Ron DeSantis did the unthinkable; he offered money incentives for earliest repair. This major freeway was reopened within several weeks snd shows no signs of weakness. Capitalism wins again!

I assume that Governor Shapiro didn’t bother mentioning all of the contractual requirements he needed to waive in order to get the work started within days, rather than several years.

If we want to know why China is cleaning our clock regarding infrastructure, and soon militarily, we can start by looking at all of the CRAP we force on large projects.

14 days from now we will find out how competent the PA Dems are, and Guv Shapiro too.

If there is anything to learn from this situation, it's that Josh Shapiro has more leverage in the state than the road construction lobby, and if you know anything about the state of Pennsylvania, you know that means Josh Shapiro is a pretty freaking wily politician.

The I95 collapse happened in a place where it really didn't matter that they'd pile up dirt and destroy the underpass area. There are underpasses under I95 one block on either side of this underpass, and the only businesses on the other side of cottman ave are a tiny marina and some scrap yards.

But, he's doing it, and he's going to be praised like Ron DeSantis when he pushed in all that sand to reopen the Sanibel Island causeway. Totally not the same level of complexity or effort, but that's how it's going to be framed.

Don't be surprised if Shapiro throws his hat in the ring for President soon.

What you say is true, but what you quote is also true, in a way.

It IS extraordinary that union trade workers in PA are getting this done so quickly.

Normally in PA a highway project such as this, done by union workers would take YEARS.

There must be some serious payola or other incentive to get them off their duffs.

The unions want Shapiro to run for POTUS, so they will work to help clear the road for getting this done quickly.

The media already portrayed this a Shapiro’s big test of leadership.

The fix is in, folks. The unions would NEVER cooperate like this with a Republican governor.

Mastriano would have done it quicker.

Nope. Every union and environmental group would have thrown every roadblock at the project to ensure it took years to be completed.

Shapiro is a fellow communist and a party member in good standing, so they clear the path for him to look like a hero.

I stated when it collapsed they would say it will take months to reopen, then it will open fairly quick and they say look what we did.

Lying POS as always.
