If a NATO country decided to send troops into Ukraine, for whatever reason, they would be subject to the rules of modern warfare. However, if France, for example, were to send troops into Ukraine, they would not trigger an Article 5 response if they were attacked.

Unless they were launched from subs or warships. They could possibly be launched from long-range bombers.
But all of this is really unnecessary. The fact that this is getting ratcheted up just shows how much it is truly viewed a war of “The Western Order” vs. Russia.
