Maybe it's time to install a payment window in the governor's office. Consider the raises that Gov. Gray Davis approved for the state's prison guards.

On Jan. 16, he signed a 34 percent pay increase for the correctional officers, raising pay from $50,000 to $65,000 per guard over the four-year contract. Then, just over two weeks ago, he collected a campaign donation of $251,000 from the officers' union.

Wow. It's getting bad for Davis when the major newspaper in the most liberal city in the country starts to trash him.

That's the whole crux, isn't it. "Sure, it's a hopeless mess... but it's my hopeless mess!" Look at how all the 'rats held together during the Clinton regime, no matter how despicable and loathesome he was revealed to be. They got that "unity" thang down, as conservatives DO NOT.

Fascist Davis in his first election as gov of Kali, got the prison guard vote with this out right buying of the vote a short time before the election.

I don't speak to two local guards, who were very outspoken pseudo conservatives until Davis made the promise raise their wages if elected. Even though, they weren't state prison guards, that forced our county to up their wages to keep from losing them. These guys literally put Davis stickers over the repubie's stickers on their SUV's and pickup's bumpers!

One complained to me about the danger he was in if there was a blackout as a prison guard. I told him to put some ice on it, get his knee pads out, and kneel in front of his lord and master, the one he voted for if there was a black out at the jail. We haven't talked to each other since then.

Note that this is a reason that a) Davis won't do much to stop crime (gotta have criminals if you want to have good prison business) and b) Why he does support long sentences for the few who do get caught.

In addition to the contributions Davis has received from the CCPOA, remember the million plus dollar contributions and independent expenditures CCPOA paid in the 1998 election.

This is so blatant I'm surprised there isn't a quid pro quo investigation on it ... other politicians lose their jobs or elections for far less obvious shenanigans!

Talk about using figures to skew opinion. The average annual pay increase is 6.7%. It is ahead of inflation but the article doesn't address whether the original pay was in line with what prison guards might earn in the private sector. If not then a catch up over 4 years is a perfectly legitimate way to correct it.

My fellow GP'ers watch out for bait and switch. Don't chase something that is a trumped up charge which Davis can easily defend. Keep him on subject to account for energy crisis which he cannot defend.

It does, albiet indirectly. Surely prison guards deserve to be paid less than cops? Seems to me they require less in the way of skills, and the job is less dangerous, too.

I have to agree that this is a bribe, and it's pathetically low for the benefit they got, too. Guess Davis isn't a great negotiator.

All things being equal, it depends. Do the guard's have same retirement benefits, health etc ? Which job is more dangerous ? Which is the private sector, say Pinkerton's, willing to pay more to ?

These are questions that need to be adressed before assuming its anything more than adjusting pay to market.
