California : Will Oracle scandal have legs or fade away as a low-level blunder?

There is, in any political scandal, a tipping point -- an indefinable moment when it becomes evident that it will be someone's political ruination or fade away.

The Watergate scandal is the most famous example of the former. When former Sen. Howard Baker asked his famous question -- "What did the president know and when did he know it?" -- it became clear that Richard Nixon had lost Republican support and was doomed.

Hate to be a pessimist but I believe Oracle will fade, but then I think the cal-power crisis is a far bigger scandal.

This one is tougher for Davis to blame on someone else.
He has to use the "I didn't know anything" defense!

The R`s that are running for the California House and Senate are in a really neat position and can, if they do this right,put a major hurt on his Greyness. All they have to do is ,everyday, ask their Rat opponents why they are covering up for the Gov and insist that the commitees of the legislature conduct a through investigation of the Gov. and his fund raising. If the Rats don`t do it,we win..if they don`t, we win...kinda neat,huh

I don't think that the Cal GOP has any idea how to win. A chance at victory has been handed to them by complete ineptitude on the part of the Democrats and a dark horse outsider with lots of money jumping into the race. And they can still lose it.

What we need to do is talk to everyone responsible for signing on on this deal, and find out their individual reasons for the pressure.

As a general rule, I'm inclined to believe that this deal was simply spectacular ineptitude -- but that opens a question that in my mind is even more serious than corruption: The thought that Gray Davis showed such poor judgement as to hire someone this dumb in an important position.

I'd actually rather have someone in government who was mildly corrupt but knew what he was doing than to be governed by idiots who have no clue. And both the power crisis and budget crisis make me feel that the latter is the case.
