Lawmakers broke an initial state budget deadlock Thursday after Senate Democrats agreed to remove $3.5 billion in tax increases from a preliminary budget plan.

The move cleared the way for the Senate to approve its version of the budget 27-12, and for a six-member, two-house conference committee to begin efforts to put together a budget compromise.

Here come the threats!

Sen. Don Perata, D-Oakland, warned Republicans that if they hold up the budget and cripple state government it could backfire on them in the November elections.

"If this body allows the government of the state to be impaired the way the federal government was impaired in 1995, then the public will see its way clear to find out who was responsible," he said.

"Making operation of the state a partisan rather than a nonpartisan operation does not benefit anyone."

Senate Budget Committee Chairman Steve Peace, D-El Cajon, is the hack who authored the deregulation bill that has now cost Californians tens of billions of dollars.

The guy’s days are numbered as a legislator, but in my opinion, he can’t leave soon enough.

Perata must be smoking something. You can't threaten a looser with a loss.

When is the last time Republicans won anything in November in California.

If the Republicans Cave-in on this and vote for tax hikes then we might as well vote Democratic. Its time to get some backbone CA. Republicans. Do not listen to Dems. or the threats because we have nothing to loose.

These guys are one vote short of a 2/3rds majority in the Senate. Its pitiful that they have to grasp at blaming Republicans for the mess.

Dear Senator Don Perata, we're already in the minority. We relly don't have much to left to lose. On the other hand I have a feeling you will if you attempt to pass a budget laden with more taxes and accounting gimmicks instead of one that puts California back on the path to fiscal health. You can take your threats and stick them where the sun don't shine.
