This is good news. But I think back to the infamous 2000 election. G.W. was way ahead of Algore in the summer and Algore came up from behind and .... we know ... Algore nearly stole the election ...

No, Dubya was not way ahead. He led slightly in the summer. Both candidates received bumps from their respective conventions, but the race remained close throughout. Gore did close toward the end, compliments of the DWI story, thereby tilting many swing states to him and turning a potential large electoral victory into a squeaker.

We'll never know the true impact of the bogus Florida call on Dubya's final popular vote count.

Incumbents are the known quantity in a race. Once voters have formed a strong negative impression of an incumbent, that impression rarely improves enough to translate into a vote for the incumbent. If Davis really is at 34 percent with likely voters, and Simon runs a decent campaign and avoids Davis's dirt machine, Simon should win. What Davis is trying to do is to increase Simon's negatives into something close to his own. With his huge war chest of funds, he may be able to do enough attack ads to smear Simon significantly, but he runs the risk of honking off the people who already don't like him even more so he can't win them back.

Gore didn't come from behind. It was Democratic inner-city vote fraud to the tune of at least 5 million votes. More votes were cast in Philly than there were voters.
