While Republicans only managed 23 percent of the Hispanic vote in 1998 and 2000, Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan regularly received up to 40 percent.

I appreciate the writer's enthusiasm, I think his logic needs a little work here. There is no comparison between the hispanic voting block of 1968-1984 and that of today. It was far, FAR more assimilated twenty years ago.

It has become a media mantra to say Simon can't win because he's "an extremist" - without bothering to define what that is.

An extremist is one who believes an embryo is a bit more than a clump of cells that may be disposed of like trash.

Perhaps his numbers among Hispanics have improved, but I remain extremely skeptical that Bush's huge approval ratings will mean anything come 2004. A lot of those people who say they approve of him would never dream of voting for him. 2004 will be extraordinarily close. Count on it. America has yet to come to a consensus on the culture war that brought about the nailbiter in 2000. We are still a divided nation, regardless of the terrorist attacks.

I told you about the change in Bush's share of the vote today as opposed to 2000. That's a big step from just job approval numbers.

How do you reconcile that statement with this:

President Bush is wildly popular with Latinos and Simon's use of Spanish ads to reach out appears to be bearing fruit. Even the Los Angeles Times, which usually functions as a Democrat Party house organ, admits Simon may be making significant in-roads into this vital constituency.

You're right that is amazing that the Times would admit Simon is doing well there. Still you will never see the media say that Republicans are unified.
