I don't suppose there's any chance the auto-industry will tell CA to stick it and just stop selling cars there.

For those who live elsewhere: The greater Los Angeles area is home to the national U.S. HQ of several leading auto manufacturers, including Toyota, Nissan and Honda, among others. (I work at Nissan national HQ.) The Ports of Los Angeles and San Francisco are among the leading ports of entry for imported vehicles into the U.S. Between the manufacturers, dealerships, vehicle transportation companies, and other support industries, the auto industry is one of the leading employers in California.

The bill Davis just signed has the potential to essentially kill the auto industry in this state. It gives sweeping, virtually carte blanche, regulatory powers to the Air Resources Board, which has already proposed a 2-cents-a-mile tax per year on every motorist, and huge surcharges on SUV's and other larger passenger vehicles. The 2-cents-a-miles would be assessed when we go get our smog check, and would be based on the odometer reading. The potential damage to the state's economy cannot be overstated. And such a tax would hit lower-income people the hardest (Dems always claim they are for the little people, but never live up to that claim). By the way, notice that this law does not take effect until Jan. 1006, when a 2nd Davis term will be up. The Dems are also gutless wonders. But as always, the news media have done a sterling job of covering up for Davis and the Dems on the impact of this incredibly important bill.

And by the way, all you Simon apologists out there: he has been NOWHERE TO BE FOUND on this bill. So far in this campaign, he has shown ZERO leadership, ZERO guts, and ZERO understanding of what it takes to be elected. If he wins, and that's a very big if, it will be by sheer blind luck, not because he did anything to earn anyone's vote.
