Simon has been dogged about his personal income tax returns since April 15, when Davis released his returns and challenged Simon to follow suit.

To your knowledge has ole Grayout challenged Mr and Mrs Majority Leader to release their tax returns?

"No law requires candidates or elected officials to release their returns, but many, including Davis, choose to."

Even this will not suffice to quell this harangue of Simon by the Left. They are desperate evil swine. Simon is California's last best chance of survival as a republic. Otherwise, the Bear Flag will turn into (dare I say it) the rainbow fag (er, flag)!

Simon paid more in taxes than "the Prince of Darkness" earned (figuratively speaking) in a year. Hmmm... that must really cheese off Gray, doncha think?

Shoot, why bother? Simon should just go on vacation somewhere out of state until November. Gray Davis is self-destructing spectacularly well. For example, signing the "Everyone Must Walk To Work" bill. Next he'll be publicly molesting schoolkids or something. Simon shouldn't mess with a good thing.

Reporters grilled Simon about his decision to make the documents available for such a limited time and asked for copies to be reviewed by accountants. Simon acknowledged there is "a lot of information there," but said he thinks there is sufficient time and told reporters to "take notes."

Did these reporters even spend that much time poring over or having accountants re-check Davis' tax returns? I have read nothing about the content of Davis' returns other than that he paid $55k tax for an income of $200k last year -- information that a reporter should be able to copy in fifteen seconds.

It would have been nice if Simon's tax returns could have been private. I hope this tax return issue can finally fade and Simon can concentrate on campaign issues, now that reporters find there's really nothing interesting in the returns; but, the liberal media may try to create an issue where none exists to distract from the state's other problems, in particular the state's own spending spree budget, the gigantic (and possibly illegal) bond sale, and Davis' failures to lead.

This whole episode shows the depths of idiocy that Simon and his campaign seem able to plumb. Anyone with an ounce of political sense should have known right from the start that it was politically impossible for Simon to stonewall on his tax information. It was a heaven-sent issue for Davis and his attack dogs in the media to harp on.

Sure enough, after being thoroughly beaten up on it, Simon is being forced by enormous political pressure to (partially) give in. But Simon still doesn't get it: by continuing to limit the access to his tax records, he allows Davis to keep the issue alive. In some ways this half-measure is even worse; it really makes it look like Simon is desperately trying to hide embarrassing facts.

Whatever political damage might be contained in Simon's tax returns can't begin to compare to the political damage he's suffered by trying to withold them. A competent, experienced politician would have released the records months ago without being asked. An incompetent, amateur politican would wait until his campaign was severely wounded and then release the records, thereby assuring himself the worst of all possible worlds.

Are Simon and Davis both competing to lose the election?

Simon repeated calls Monday for Davis to release his fund-raising calendar, which Davis has never made public.

What's Gray trying to hide?

Kudos for Simon. I never thought he should be forced to release his tax returns because they are no one's business. They are private and should remain so. What the IRS did in releasing those names in their complaint against KPMG is atrocious and they should be held liable. Simon et. al. aren't accused of any wrongdoing, and should have their names dragged through the mud.

OF course, Davis et. al. won't rest on this tax issue, but the fact is, Simon has paid more than his fair share like almost all of us, and Davis has wasted our money. Davis needs to be fired. DUMP DAVIS!!!!!!!!!

My fevernt hope is that Simon is setting up the press on these tax returns. Stringing them along for months and then dribble them out till after the election.

Here's what's wrong with Simon:

On the VERY DAY that he should be out there bashing Davis over the SUV Bill (now SUV Law) Simon distracts the media from it, and gives them a stripper's peak at his tax returns.

COME ON, BILL!!!! GET A COMMUNICATIONS MANAGER!!!

Spend today bashing Davis, then spend tomorrow telling everyone how you paid your taxes!!!

Gosh Darn it! This guy really makes me angry! He has the message, but he tells it as though he's speaking in Pig Latin!

Wouldn't releasing your income tax receipts with your SSN number attached to it be a violation of the Privacy Act of 1974?
