Republican Bill Simon fields questions about the fraud case involving a family owned business after a speech Friday to the California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce at the Hyatt Hotel in Sacramento.

Seeking to minimize the fallout from this week's $78 million fraud verdict against his family's investment firm, Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon on Friday distanced himself from the business experience he has so often touted.

Norm I'm beginng to wonder if I should have been so quickly disappointed in 43 for not enthusiastically supporting Simon up front.

Keep the faith. Politics is not a game for weak-kneed folks.
I can't speak for Bush, nor will I speak against him. The voters in the primary selected Simon. We knew this would be a bloodbath.

Simon is standing in there taking it like a man, something Davi$ seems unable to do when pressed about why he spent so damn much time raising campaign funds and so little attending to the business of the state he was elected to serve and protect.

MTBE .. DioXin .. AMBER .. ORACLE .. ChampionCampaignFundRaiserOfAllTimeGuv... ..

Who cares more for the people of California? Who has done more for the poor, the disadvantaged. Who was elected to do it and hasn't?

I'm trying.

Last night Davis gave a five minute, live interview to KMJ radio. The subject was the Amber Warning system.

We called KMJ and warned them that the plan was proposed by a Republican assemblyman and that Davis had strongly opposed the plan even after the California Assembly had favored it with a unanimous resolution. We called assemblyman Runner's Sacramento office and warned them about Davis' move.

KJM (owned by CBS but conservative locally) effectively blunted Davis with clever questioning when Davis tried to ease into taking credit for the system. The result was a PSA rather than a campaing speech.

Thanks for calling KMJ and the Assemblyman. Davi$ needs to be whopped upside the head everytime he tries to claim credit when it definitely is not due.

Unfortunately my motivation for the effort was my hatred for Davis' public persona and his governing record rather than a blind loyalty to our Republican candidate.

From my viewpoint the upcomming election could be the first in US history where over $50M was spent campaigning and "none of the above" was elected.

There are many different kinds of leader.

One type is hands-on, involved in every single detail, and generally works himself to death - and fails - when put in an important position with diverse responsibilities. I'll give you an example of this kind of leader: Gray Davis. And I'll give you another: Bill Clinton. This kind of leader tends to worry too much about details while losing sight of the big picture.

Another kind is hands off, delegates like mad, and only gets involved in the truly important issues. This type of leader tends to be an imaginative and creative guy who comes up with new perspectives. I'll give you an example of this kind of leader: George W Bush. And another one: Ronald Reagan. This kind of leader tends to worry not at all about details, but always keeps his eye on the ball and the big picture.

I would submit that California is such a big and complex state that only the second kind of leader could govern it successfully. And I will give you another example of that kind of leader: Bill Simon.

Hope that helps give some urgently needed perspective.

I'm watching this race from Seattle, WA. I have one question. Why try to take over a sinking ship (California) from the Captain at the helm (Grey Davis)?

Why did Reagan run? And what if he hadn't?

What personal goodies could Simon avail himself of if he is elected? He will be under a microscope as intense if not more so then the one Bush and Cheney live with every day. It goes with the business. I say let him have a turn at the wheel.

GraYouT has already battered this state enough with his handling of the energy crisis and his lack of concern re: MTBE and Dioxin... not to mention his influence peddling program.

IMHO this is the wrong strategy for Simon. His company was broadsided by a scumbucket who lucked into an Ito-class judge and a runaway jury. If that wouldn't give a politician the rights to mount a tort-reform crusade, nothing will. This is something Simon should start talking about. Californians are tired of tyranny by civil suit.

Here's a couple of links. Should do the trick.

California Sec'y of State site ... Info on campaign contributions, donors, etc,. Just recently, candidates should have submitted up to date info.

California GOP site State GOP site

Simon for Governor site Bill's own site .. sign up for the email to keep abreast of campaign developments, etc. Or find out how you can help, donate time or money. Thanks for asking and spread the word.

bump for more digging...

from http://timelines.ws/20thcent/1998_12.HTML :

1998 Dec 8, Paul Edward Hindelang Jr. (51) agreed to forfeit to the US government $50 million that he had acquired dealing drugs in the 1970s. He had helped pioneer the "mother ship" smuggling technique. (WSJ, 6/2/99, p.A1)

Wondering all kinds of things about that investigation...
