Report: Top Bin Laden deputy caught in Pakistan (al-zawahri caught?)
Jerusalem Post ^

Posted on 09/27/2004 10:25:24 AM PDT by jbwbubba

Top Bin Laden deputy Ayman al-Zawahri has been caught in Pakistan, according to a report from the region quoted on Israel Radio Monday.

Pakistani forces operating against al Qaida strongholds in the country report capturing the Egyptian national, who was formerly the head of the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which operated in the past against the Egyptian regime.

Earlier Monday, the US commander of coalition forces in Afghanistan Lieutenant-General David Barno told Reuters that there is little evidence of al Qaida fighters still in Afghanistan, and that Pakistan's crackdown on al Qaida-linked operatives has made life harder for fugitives hiding in tribal areas near the Afghan - Pakistani border.

I saw on Lucianne that Pakistan denied this.

Al Zawahiri IS indeed TOP Al Qaeda. He is even more important for al Qaeda, than Bin Laden. Bin Laden is more of a figurehead, but Zawahiri has been the brains behind the major terrorist attacks.

Zawahri is not Zaqawi, right?

Right. Two different individuals. Zawahiri is the Egyptian doctor who usually appears with Bin Laden in the old videos, while Zaqawi is the Iraqi terrorist that we believe is operating out of Fallujah.

Al Zawahiri is hardly small potatoes. Camel-jockey he may be, but he is a criminal, assassin (Sadat) and is the speaker in most of the Al Qaeda videos and audio tapes released since the Taliban fell.

His capture or death would be a HUGE event. There is nobody in AQ besides OBL himself that would be a greater coup for the War on Terror. Think Uday and Qusay's liquidation prior to Saddam's.

Let's all pray this is true -- even you, TahRAYzah -- and, if so, here's hoping they give him a little of what Private English was dishing.

How come every time some two-bit camel-jockey is caught, he's a "top Bin Laden aid"?

Lower level bin Laden aids only water the camels?

You have this wrong, he is no camel jockey or anything else. He is the Operational Boss of al Qeada. At best bin Laden is the symbolic and spiritual head. Al Zawahiri is the operational head of al Qeada.

The problem is that about every eight weeks we see this story. Sometimes it says they've got a top guy cornered and we all think it might be al Zawahiri. Other times they name him by name. Sometimes he makes a miraculous escape. Sometimes it turns out to be some guy we've never heard of who they tell us was the Number 3 man in AQ. They must have had 50 No.3 guys.

Pardon our cynicism, but announcing the imminent capture of al Zawahiri is the equivalent of calling "wolf."
