Sound off! Why is Bill Clinton so popular? [Go for it!]
Edmonton Journal ^ | March 10, 2006 | --

Former U.S. president Bill Clinton charmed an Edmonton audience Thursday night with his charisma and magical personality. More than 7,000 paid up to $200 each to hear the 59-year-old two-term Democrat president speak about Canada-U.S. relations and our country’s continuing military role in Afghanistan.

But it wasn’t so much what he said but the way he said it - with confidence and sincerity. Those in the audience sat mesmerized by his words, feeling they were part of a private chat rather than listening a speech in a big arena. Despite a White House sex scandal that made him the first president to face impeachment proceedings since Richard Nixon, he left office more popular than when he entered. He is now the most sought-after celebrity speaker in the world, taking in a reported $150,000 for the one-hour speech.

Why do you think Clinton remains so popular?

I have to admit it, but I think most people would like Bill Clinton if they knew him in person.

I did meet Clinton once and, to my shame, found myself liking him briefly. He seemed to have the ability to identify those who stood against him (or his values) and made an effort to be particularly charming to them and defuse any confrontation. Clinton could do this effortlessly and seem completely genuine.

Plus Clinton had the advantage in that even those who disliked him would show respect for the office when in his presence.

The event was a charity function after he left office.

Most people, especially when in a formal setting, are unlikely to become confrontational, even with people they do not like. I saw John Kerry at Cafe Milano in Georgetown a couple of weeks ago. I think the man is a tool, but I certainly would not come up to a stranger (which he is) and start foaming at the mouth.

He should still be in Hope smooth-talking local strippers and paying a bundle in child support every month.

I've always said, if it wasn't for Hillary and her bottomless ambition, Bill would have risen, at most, to be a srudent-groping law professor at Georgetown.

Hillary was always the driving force. She is incredibly intelligent, endlessly ambitious, politically savvy and completely ruthless.

Let's not forget that as we head towards 2008. If we underestimate Hillary, inauguration day in 2009 is going to be mighty painful.

Not only would I say he lacks charisma but I wouldn't hang "successful politician" on him either. He was impeached for crissakes and the dem party went into a downward spiral shortly after he took office.

But the msm drums into its audience that he's loved and the greatest politician in history, so there it is....

Yes, he enabled Hillary, but that is exactly why she choose him in the first place. She has been using him and his shallow "charisma" since their college days. Even she did not expect to go this far. She was happy with the Governship until fate put her in the position to be in the media national bulls-eye. She will will show that she is the one in control and in power when she relegates "slick Willie" to the subordinate position. I can't wait. Hillary can not control her ego, her contempt for people, her public humiliation at the hands of the womanizer that didn't womanize her. Hell has no fury as a woman scorned...hillary...post Monica, Kathleen, Juanita, ad nauseum. Watch the news, Hillary will show her true self, this dog don't hunt!
