Neither the UK nor France recognized the Confederacy despite the efforts of the Confederate government. Britain did allow two CSA warships to be built in their shipyards.

Great Britain had causus belli to join the war, had they chosen, when two Confederate emissaries were seized from the British mail ship Trent in November 1861. The Lincoln administration defused the situation by releasing Slidell and Mason.
