Media Bias (NPR Audio Report On Goldberg and McGowan Books)
National Public Radio Morning Edition ^ | March 20, 2002

Posted on 03/21/2002 2:20:18 AM PST by PJ-Comix

NPR's Juan Williams has the first of two reports on allegations of bias in the news media. Today, Williams talks to two authors, who argue that the news media have a liberal agenda and are overly sensitive to the concerns of minorities and women. Bernard Goldberg is author of the best-selling book, Bias, and William McGowan is author of Coloring the News. (Bias: A CBS Insider Exposes How the Media Distort the News, by Bernard Goldberg, is published by Regnery Pub; ISBN: 0895261901 and Coloring the News: How Crusading for Diversity Has Corrupted American Journalism, by William McGowan, is published by Encounter Books; ISBN: 1893554287.)

Listen to the 8 minute segment HERE.

The strange thing is that Juan Williams did NOT disagree with Goldberg's and McGowan's assertions of media bias. Instead he cited polls showing that people trusted their local newspaper and that they knew how to filter out the bias. In other words, he seemed to be saying that it is OK for the media to be biased because people can filter it all out on their own. Bizarre. Listen to that segment for yourself.

I heard the report yesterday, and was surprised that NPR and Juan didn't try to spin it or disagree. Pretty fair report, I must say, even though I loathe NPR.

All they could do was lamely come up with the excuse that media bias really doesn't matter since people know how to filter it out. Actually not true. When I was a teenager reading or viewing the news, I didn't have the background to know that what I was seeing was bias (which is why I was a liberal).

NPR can surprise sometimes. I used to listen to Weekend Edition every Saturday when I worked overtime. I can't listen anymore. The left wing bias has become too nauseating.

But, the most comprehensive and non-biased reporting I have ever heard on partial-birth abortions was on NPR's All Things Considered. This was at the beginning of the controversy a few years back. They described the procedure in gruesome detail and gave the pro-life side a good hearing. Anyone who heard the report could not help but be disgusted by the subject.

NPR has some great shows. Car talk, What do you know, Wait Wait don't tell me, Back porch music, and the best of them all... A Prairie Home Companion.

Thats the news from Lake Woebagone...

Garrison Keillor is as far to the left as it is possible to go. He cuts down conservatives every time he gets a chance.

There is no doubt he is a big lefty. But he puts on an excellent program. And I know I am not the only conservative that listens to his show every week.

His sound effects guy, Tom Keith, is the best in the business at this time, if not of all time.
