I doubt that pedophilia will ever achieve societal acceptance. The reason that homosexuality has been able to achieve some level of mainstream toleration is that most people believe that behavior by consenting ADULTS shouldn't be illegal. Pedophilia can't make the same claim: there's too much evidence of the devastation that early sexual activity can cause. Also, a child is a child and, legally, can't give consent because their judgment isn't the best. Any adult who would have sexual activity with a child is exploitative, to say the least.

Harris Mirkin recently wrote a lead article in the Journal of Homosexuality entitled "The Pattern of Sexual Politics: Feminism, Homosexuality and Pedophilia." Using social-constructionist theory, he argues that the concept of child molestation is a "culture- and class-specific creation" which can and should be changed.

He likens the battle for the legalization of pedophilia to the battles for women's rights, homosexual rights, and even the civil rights of blacks.

He sees the hoped-for shift as taking place in two stages. During the first stage, the opponents of pedophilia control the debate by insisting that the issue is non-negotiable--while using psychological and moral categories to silence all discussion.

But in the second stage, Mirkin says, the discussion must move on to such issues as the "right" of children to have and enjoy sex.

With more research, some scholars say, it may be only a matter of time before modern society accepts adult-child sex, just as it has learned to accept premarital sex and homosexual sex. "Children are the last bastion of the old sexual morality," wrote one of the trailblazers for this view, Harris Mirkin, an associate professor of political science at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

You are right on target. It will be cast as a "civil rights" crusade to "decriminize" children who want to have sex, which is a "choice" the have the "right" to make for themselves. First the academics will issue "studies" to bless "consensual" child sex, then the APA will delete pedophilia from the DSM, then Hollywood and the P.C. establishment will try to shout down and shame any opposition.

Remember "Brave New World"? "Sex play" was taught and encouraged for the children. People who didn't have promiscuous sex were views as deviants.

The strangest and most morally repugnant ideas held by ivory-tower academics gradually assume the legitimacy in mainstream thought and culture. Just take a look around - what do you see? This is actually old news. It has been promoted for many years. Incest has also been promoted by similar "academics at mainstream universities."

Well, the concept is not entirely off base. When life-spans were much shorter, marriage at sexual maturity - 13 or 14, was not out of the ordinary, even in the US. 

The idea that some sexually mature 13 year-olds are also mentally mature enough for a sexual relationship is sound however, there aren't enough people like that to justify a lowering of the age of consent....not by any means.  When I say "some" I think we might be talking about .05% of the population....at the most.

On the other hand, I think the article is more talking about "Sex with a child" i.e. someone who is not sexually mature.  That's pedophilia, in all circumstances, and it should never be tolerated.

I think that something will actually come of this. The powerful prey on the weak and as the sexually deviant become more politically powerful in this nation their will be done. I'm picturing Trent Lott proudly announcing, "If it weren't for the Republicans our 13 year olds would be in danger of sexual predators.
