A play about teen-age homosexuality, "Josh Keenan Comes Out to the World," will tour Upstate New York high schools next fall under the auspices of the Hangar Theatre.

The theater commissioned the play in the spring of 2001 after winning a $5,000 grant from the Gill Foundation to support the development of a play about teen-age homosexuality. The Denver, Colo.-based foundation was started by software magnate Tim Gill. Its mission is to secure equal opportunity for people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.

What bothers me about this is that it represents preaching of a specific political agenda in the public schools. Note the description of the foundation that funded the play: "Its mission is to secure equal opportunity for people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity."

That is nothing less than a political manifesto. Imagine the likliehood of a play espousing a less-PC political agenda making its way into most public schools.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I think I'll write a play about the the trials and tribulations of a god-fearing family and the horrors of abortion as they relate to the family's attempt to get huge granite statues of the 10 commandments set up in all schools and government offices. Of course this will be done from the family's huge cattle ranch in the Klamath River Basin. Reckon I can get this sponsored and presented to all schools in the nation?

This being Ithaca, there are probably many families who would want their children to see the play in question. But of course many parents will not, and they are placed in the uncomfortable position of having to send a special note to the school and having their kids removed from the classroom - something few parents or children enjoy.

This story illustrates why I believe the only real solution is vouchers. If you want to send your children to this kind of school, fine. But give others the option to send their kids to schools where other values are taught.

Heard something on the news on the radio this morning during my commute to work about one of the schools here in the Dalla Metroplex. Seems some students want to start an organization to promote homosexual understanding and defuse what they see as misundertandings between the homosexual and heterosexual student community. Gobbledegook for they want to start a gay club. According to the commentator there are already thousands of such organizations in the country. Anyone have and experience with this in their community?

Our world seems to be going to hell in a handbasket.

Another good reason not to send your kids to public schools.

Put pulling your own kids out does not abdicate our responsibly to care about schools. The public schools are here to stay, and we need to work to turn them back into the high quality, EDUCATIONAL institutions they once were.

You beat me to the post. Kudos.

Of special note to me, at least, is that the play's author is a FOURTH GRADE teacher. Fourth grade?!? Is there any doubt that he is hard at work indoctrinating his students on the acceptability, if not superiority, of the gay lifestyle?

When you don't have a future, the present becomes a plaything, I suppose.

No doubt a delegate to the 2000 DNC National Convention too.

At first it occurred to me that every day is April Fools in Ithaca, but after thinking about it, it seems more apropriate to say that, in Ithaca, every day is Halloween. Boo! ;)

Scary, huh? The inmates really are running the asylum...

The "Darts and Laurels" column in today's Ithaca Journal has a what they call a "'Dart' [on] the various standards that are part of life in the Ithaca City School District. A play about teen-age homosexuality, 'Josh Keenan Comes Out to the World,' will tour Upstate high schools, including Ithaca's next fall. Educational materials to be used in classroom discussions about the play are being generated by the Hangar and several other organizations including the ICSD:

"In order to listen to this talk, IHS is sending out parent consent forms. How about "Prayer In The Schools?" Can't we please, also, have parent consent forms sent out so our kids can have permission to pray in the schools?"

Sadly, it is typical for the Ithaca Journal to only print the rare conservative opinion as part of their highly truncated "darts and laurels" column.

Ithaca is the City of Evil.
