DATELINE, NEW YORK===== Bryant "The RED" Gumbel out, Brian Sussman in. TV weather forecaster turned morning news anchor Brian Sussman to replace Bryant Gumbel on the CBS morning show. CBS, in what they describe as an awakening to the currently poorly serviced market niche of "flyover country," received complaints from various viewers from Berkeley California who were livid when they heard that Brian Sussman, who anchors the KPIX early morning news program in the San Francisco market, filled in for Lee Rodgers on the morning drive time talk radio show airing daily on KSFO. As KSFO is noted for being the Conservative fly in the Bay Area liberal ointment, the complaining Bay Area CBS viewers were aghast to find out about Sussman's moonlighting on what they consider to be "hate radio."

Said CBS spokesman Josey Wales Newsheriff "we are hoping to take the morning drive time Conservative talk radio news program concept to new heights in the video realm. We will do for the morning wake up time TV slot what Michael Savage has done to the afternoon and evening on radio. We are planning to work out a deal with Free Republic to officially source material. And this is but the beginning. More big changes are on the way at CBS News! God Bless America!"

I haven't watched him in years, but I remember that he had/has an annoying habit of ending questions with the word, "yes?"

I think we can agree that no one will miss his arrogance and patronizing attitude, yes?

I will never forget when Bryant was on Today, and Pat Buchanan was running for President (I think the second time). Apparently, Pat had been doing the shows every week during the election. Bryant had been on vacation the week before, and Pat said "Welcome back Bryant" and Bryant said "Wish I could say the same to you sir." I was not a Pat supporter, but you can bet I made a bee line to the phone and called NBC to complain about the unprofessional, blantant bias. Of course, everyone complained about Bryant and it never did any good.

Although I hardly ever watched the guy, I have two Gumbel bumbles that no one has yet mentioned. (I know, there are so many!)

#1: Circa 1990, Gumbel hosted a TV special called The R.A.C.E. It was a race-hustle, in which two pseudo-scientists came up with a test of one's racial attitudes, which they gave the acronym, R.A.C.E. Gumbel's compadres, who insisted that the test was morally neutral, administered the test to a number of guests, including conservative Boston University President John Silber. Silber shocked Gumbel by giving all the "correct" answers to the test. Silber, who in addition to being a brilliant guy with cojones grandes, is a political philosopher, turned the tables on Gumbel & Co., asking, "But if the test is morally neutral, how come you keep praising me for the answers I'm giving?" Neither Gumbel nor his cronies had any answers for Silber's question.

#2: During the 1996 campaign, with the lack of professionalism that would turn out to be his hallmark (like I said, I almost never watched the guy), Gumbel frequently spoke insultingly of GOP candidate Bob Dole. I was sure that a white host engaging in such on-air political baiting would have been forced to apologize, been suspended, and possibly fired. But after some of Rosie O'Donnell's escapades, I'd better amend that to "a white, heterosexual, able-bodied male" host.
