Lesbians: We made our baby deaf on purpose by James Langton in New York A deaf lesbian couple have admitted deliberately creating what are believed to be the world's first designer handicapped babies. The two women tracked down a deaf sperm donor to ensure that their daughter, who is now five, would inherit the same inherited hearing disabilty that they both share. The couple were so pleased with the result that they have just had a second child, called Gauvin, using the same technique. Doctors who examined the boy say he is completely deaf in one ear and has only partial hearing in the other. In an interview with the Washington Post, the women - Sharon Duchesneau, who gave birth, and Candace McCullough, her lesbian lover - say that they believe deafness is "an identity not a medical affliction that needs to be fixed". They were so desperate to have children who share their handicap that the women asked their local sperm bank to provide a deaf donor, but were told congential hearing loss immediately disqualifies candidates. Instead they turned to a deaf male friend for help, producing what they call their first "perfect baby" - their five-year-old daughter Jehanne. Before their son was born, the women said: "A hearing baby would be a blessing; a deaf baby would be a special blessing.'' Both women, who are in their mid thirties, belong to a radical school of thought that believes deafness is a "cultural identity" not a handicap. They want their children to share the same "experiences" including learning, sign language and going to special schools for the deaf. They also consulted a "genetic counsellor" before getting pregnant who told them that with Miss Duchesneau's background, that includes four generations of deafness on her mother's side, any child conceived with a deaf sperm donor would have a 50 per cent chance of having the same handicap. After their daughter's first hearing test, the couple wrote happily in her baby book: "Oct 11, 1996 - no response at 95 decibels - DEAF!'' Their daughter attends a special kindergarten for children with hearing problems. After tests on their baby son showed he also had severe problems, they decided against giving him a deaf aid in the one ear that still has some hearing, saying they will leave the decision to him when he is older. The couple's behaviour has appalled children's rights groups in the United States. The conservative Family Research Council said their decision to "intentionally give a child a disability" was "incredibly selfish". The council's spokesman, Fred Connor, said: "These women are taking the idea of creating so-called designer babies to a horrible new level.'' Even a leading member of the American National Association for the Deaf, Nancy Rarus, said she "can't understand why anyone would want to bring a disabled child into the world".

These citizens are not waiting for a 'Handicapper-General' to level the playground.
They're taking the initiative to pre-cripple infants!
That's why American Socialism will work, while all other versions failed-- that 'can-do' spirit Americans exemplify.(sarcasm off)
Adoption is not a "right" (I don't really accept the concept of the grandparents legal visitation rights to a grandchild).
Our legal system has even decided that there is no right to parenthood (your children can be taken away from you).
Looking at the thinking behind the conception of a child brings up issues of "thought crime" although when thoughts become deeds, prosecution can begin. This couple was practicing eugenics to create the strong possibility of the afflicted child that they wanted.
Since they deliberately wanted a "hobbled" child and did what they could to create and applaud this situation, they are not looking out for this child's best interests and could be subjected to CPS.
There are mothers-to-be who smoke and drink (and take offense at anyone that confronts them). Some courts have tried to prosecute this as child abuse.
Could a deaf pregnant mother place a large speaker on her stomach and turn her stereo up to 11 to induce deafness? Would this be permissible ("it's not a human, yet")?
These degenerates need to read up on Munchausen By Proxy Syndrome "(MSBP), an individual makes another person sick in order to accrue the same gains--but this time vicariously. This is a form of abuse in which children are the usual victims."
From their actions, I'm having a hard time picturing them as human, too!
They're as stupid as they are evil. Past a certain age, the brain will "forget how to learn" to hear or see. It's why doctors insist on treating vision or hearing handicapps with aids as early as practically possible.
Deaf lesbians intentionally breeding handicapped kids... I'll never understand why working stiff democrats aren't ashamed and embarrassed to be identified with the party of left wing lunacy and politikal korrektness run amuck.
I agree with the poster who suggested that the state decline to pay for the hundreds of thousands of dollars of special education that this intentionally damaged child will require while he lives with these two monsters. But let's get real, we're talking about Kalifornia here, right?

We also meet the men's two deaf Dalmatians, who have been taught to respond to sign language. Through their unique experiences, ITL explores issues such as parenting, prejudice, and identity within the gay community.

Link to the Washington Post article/interview (31March2001):
Please limit your quotes from the WP article if anyone chooses to read it as there is a restriction on FR's use of WP material. There is this tidbit about their employment: "both professionals in the mental health field". The inmates seem to be running the asylum these days.
One more quote: "And in many cases, the aim is to produce not so much a superior baby as a specific baby. A white baby. A black baby. A boy. A girl."
In China, where parents are restricted to one child, there are parents who will abort a girl child (or drown her soon afterwards). But then, we can't question the actions of parents who only want to produce a "specific" baby.
We can't print the full WP article on FR. There are a number of other agencies (who support or reject) the notion of what was done. This is why there may be a number of threads on this topic (different sources).
Designer deaf children....so amazingly cruel to the children that it renders one almost speechless.
Speaks volumes about some of the people working in the mental health field these days.
I wonder if Kalifornia dreaming might include creating designer babies as sex-toys for homosexuals; I'm pretty sure these self-obsessed freaks would have no compunctions about creating an infant with a mouth designed for oral sex, say, or a number of 'extra' orifices for the fulfilment of the parent's sick fantasies.
I have no reson to believe that the twisted perverts who occupy governmental positions would gag at further excesses; after all, they've quailed at nothing yet.
