South Dakota.

The weather takes some getting used to, though.

Here in Washington state, we have no income tax. Our property taxes vary depending upon where you are, and a group of other variables. Business taxes are low, as well as energy prices. The Liberal content is high on the west side of the Cascades, and low on the east side - but the living conditions are not as high in the east since it is more agrarian. If you're into weapons, this state does not allow civilians to own Class III weapons, which sucks.

Congratulations on fleeing the People's Republic of Kalifornia.

Born and raised there. You're right about the weather - I sure miss the thunderstorms, but not the blizzards. Law enforcement can be a little extreme there too.

No difference in politics. Property taxes high.

Come to Texas. Average property tax but cheap housing. No income tax.

The great state of Texas has no state income tax. My property taxes are less than 3K for a 140K house w/ 2 acres. Sales tax is 8.25%. Most groceries aren't taxed at all unlike in places such as Oklahoma.

BTW, I'm still paying for the year I spent working in CA. The tax form was so dad-gum complicated I should have hired a CPA to do them but I tried to save a buck and do them myself. Big mistake. They placed a tax lien on me without even notifying me I owed anything!

Yeah Joe. We KNOW that the tax collector doesn't DARE come to your walled compound near Death Valley as they don't want to take on your private army, so you can therefore afford to live in the Golden State. :)

Jezzz Clem, your blowing it. Can't you keep a secret.

Try Nevada. I've heard it's the place to go to escape high taxation. We have a friend who escaped to Montana and he thinks he's died and gone to heaven. He's off blood pressure medication, lost weight, and hunt's daily.

I'll never leave though, can't the take cold weather and I live for the coast.

here in the NW is not a bad place, just stay away from Seattle, its a goofy place. Move to mountains or the southern cost area around OR or east by idaho. Like the other post said more conservatives that come here, bring it on. We need it, happy to have you come up. I never thought Id say this to a CA person. :-)

You're right about north Florida. The panhandle is inhabitated by Southerners; south Florida is inhabitated by South Americans & Snowbirds. Though we have good friends from South & Central America, we love the genuine folks in the Tallahassee area. However, if we had it to do all over again, I believe our family might opt for Texas. Speaking from experience, a resounding NO! for Kentucky & Tennessee !!!!! Been there; done that ! Don't even consider those 2 states.

Good advice. In retrospect, Texas is probably the best choice.

I've never been a Texas resident. . .have only visited. We find the people there to be down-to-earth, proud & genuine. The landscapes around the state are vastly different. Like Florida, no state income tax. If we had it all to do over again, I would choose the Florida panhandle or Texas.

"Check out the Washington/Oregon border. One state doesn't have income tax (work there), adjoining state doesn't have sales tax (shop there). Pick the state/county with lowest property tax."

Just to clarify. Washington has NO income tax, Oregon DOES! You Live in Washington, and shop in Oregon.

Stay out of the big counties if you decide on Tennessee. Shelby Co (Memphis) high crime, even higher property taxes. Other than that the smaller counties are fine to live in. We could use more help fighting off the income tax. Car tags will cost you about $100. Sales tax is 6% + up to 2.75% for county. There is a Halls income tax on investment income. BUT none on wages yet.

Try East Texas (Tyler, etc) or Central (Austin) for best living. Many good web sites; use Google. There is also an 800 number for free huge book. I 'll try to find the number. I love it here: Enchanted Oaks, Texas

Oh, if you are into CCW, Tennessee's CCW is easy to get. Take the 8 hr safety course (price varies depending on where you take it), background check and $115 and it's yours.
