In the middle of a serious and brilliant essay, Steyn manages to come up with a bellylaugher. I'll steal it of course, for use around the office.

Excellent post. Right on, and powerfully so. The European conscience, or lack of one, is again on display to the world. Their complicity in the appeasements of the century, were largely responsible for many of the 20th century's conflagrations. Again, appeasement is way ahead of doing what is right, in Europe, and unfortunately, this week, GW jumped on the appeasement bandwagon.

From Washington's point of view, the peace mission was necessary because of a scheduling conflict over scheduling conflicts: they'd booked the Middle East for a war with Iraq only to discover the joint being used for some other guys' war. In an ideal world, the US would like to restore peace in the Middle East in order to launch a massive conflagration there.Best part of the whole superb article.

This comment is a rebuke to those in the US who at times criticize Israel for not 'pulling out' (I suppose Powell and Bush even) because those same people are planning a much larger war having much less direct provication.
