Why do American academics, who preach the need for a strong democracy at home, worry over purported restrictions of a free press, protest about the treatment of prisoners, and monitor our judiciary, nevertheless praise Palestinians — who forgo elections, censor the news, execute the untried, and have no habeas corpus — while castigating the Israelis, who vote, air their views, give rights to the accused, and have judges who overrule government legislation?

Recent church histories suggest that in the 1930s — and perhaps during the war itself — its role in opposing anti-Semitism and the Holocaust was not impressive. Given such recent troubling questions about its own principles in general and its past attitudes toward Jews in particular, why does the Vatican now, at this particularly embarrassing time, appeal to morality in condemning Israel's recent response to the terrorists' murdering of women and children?

Take a look at this site Larry. Great support for Israel. Lots of pro-Israel articles. This is a Conservative site. I think you are out of step with mainstream Conservatives.

The Palestinian Authority and spokesmen from the Arab world are now advancing a new party line by comparing their own struggle to our American Revolution with overt associations between the Founding Fathers and Mr. Arafat and his associates! Questions such as that one. The tactics of the seminar posters on Free Republic. The attempts to make everyone say, "some of my best friends are...", the desire of some to shout down any information which is negative to Israel by calling people antisemites, haters and the like.

Israel is an ally and should do whatever it takes to protect herself. But that doesn't mean Americans have to drink Israeli purple Kool-Aid. Israel does not always act in America's best interest.

This writer is not a liberal. He is not accusing the Church of perfidy during WWII, only that it did not have an impressive record. His point is that the Church has said nothing about the invasion of the Nativity site by armed gunman nor about the homocide bombers. That is one-sided and hypocritical.

Exactly the type of comment to which I referred. There is a drive on FR to shut down debate and try to bait people into saying something which will get them banned.

Free Republic was not always this way. It is a shame this is allowed to continue because many posters are leaving rather than face these constant attacks. The Pat Buchanan brigade, the McCainaics, the liberals and those who pretended to be Libertarians but were not tried to spam this forum out of existence. The Israeli seminar posters may succeed.

At the time, one of the leading Rabbis in Jerusalem and the New York Times praised the Church lavishly for helping the Jews. The writer is taking his cue from liberal revisionist historians. As far as the Pope's recent comments, that is what the Pope and other religious Christian leaders do. They are not about to blast either side.
