Yes, we were all so proud of the President when he came back down the steps to salute that soldier. As you said, he didn't have to do that, and I'm sure that soldier felt very special.

I breathed a huge sigh of relief as soon as W. took the Oath of Office. It's not to see that sentiment is apparently shared in spades by America's soldiery.

Ever since Vietnam the "leadership" of the democrats have been anti-military. More and more, the U.S. military, especially the officer corps, but even the enlisted ranks have become associated with the Republican party and more towards its conservative wing. Frankly, democrats don't serve. Simple as that.

I meant to say, "it's
nice to see that sentiment shared by America's soldiery"...sorry not enough coffee.
Yes, the left wingers do all they can to weaken the military (it's true here in the UK) with political correctness and peacekeeping missions, underminine the esprit and elan of our warriors. It's amazing the soldiers don't spit in the faces of the politicians.

Thanks for the reminder. Though I didn't
see the episode with the doggie wanting to do his business at the wheel of the helicopter, I heard quite a bit about the whole thing...
Inward strength and outward respect. These are the characteristics of true leaders.
I paraphrase Orson Scott Card, a sci-fi author, who summed it up so neatly, by saying (as I remember):
In a society that values chastity and fidelity, those who cannot follow the norms of society end up as sheep or wolves; either predators of society who take what they can and give nothing in return, or those who mindlessly follow the path laid before them. Unlike the sheep or wolves, leaders follow a script of self-sacrifice, virtue and decency... Of civilization. And in the pretense, it becomes reality.
Though there are still a lot of bad times ahead of us, I believe that W. is doing his best, that he's the best man for the job (especially now!), and that he'll do the best that he can for this country- regardless of the criticisms of less-informed tongue-wagging detractors...
Thanks again, for the reminder. Be well,

I really like Bush's attitude on so many matters!

I have been trying to solve the conundrum of pouring coffee without spilling it before I have had any to awaken myself. No solution in sight except bedside I.V drip/alarm clock. Looking for investors( long term, requires HQ south Pacific island with ex-supermodel work staff.)

Hey, I've read everything by Orson Scott Card, and I dont remember that quote. What's it from?
To: Ronin
According to Snopes2, the internet site that chronicles internet myths and urban legends:
The story about not saluting the back of Clinton is false. The story about Bush saluting Birdwell in the hospital is true.
The story about the salute after the doggie carry-- is not on the Snopes page. However, I offer this up in evidence:

Good work. You are right. The article is part urban legend and part true. And as with most urban legends, it has the ring of truth to it and you want to believe it. Especially when Clinton is involved.

One of his science fiction books- though I don't remember which one.
Basically, I zeroed in on his observation, and copied it down, kept it for many years. Eventually, the hard-drive I had it stored on died, and I simply am relying upon memory...
Sorry...
To: Naked Lunch
His quote (after thinking about it more), was
In a society that expects chastity and fidelity, those who are either too weak to resist temptations or too contemptuous of society's norms end up as either sheep or wolves: either mindless members of the herd, or predators who take what they can and give nothing.
Inner strength and outward respect. These are the values that a leader holds. Unlike the sheep or wolves, they act out a higher script- one of decency, of self-sacrifice, of public honor... Of society.
And in the pretense, it becomes reality.
After all this time, I still think it holds true.
Be well,
