HOUSTON, 25 April Crown Prince Abdullah will today meet President Bush in Crawford, Texas. Observers believe that the Saudi crown princes main objective is to provide Bush with some clear insight, directly and frankly, on the present situation in the Middle East.
The crown prince will relay to the US president the Arab agreement for a comprehensive peace plan and normalization of relations with Israel based on the implementation of UN resolutions, an end to occupation and settlement-building and the establishment of a Palestinian state.
At the same time, the US media have stepped up their criticism of the Palestinian leadership with certain segments of it having all but approved the atrocities and the sufferings inflicted on the West Bank and its residents.
These segments focus on Israels quest for a partner for peace. However, it is obvious that the Arabs need a genuine partner in making a just peace, one who accepts the right of Palestinians to create their own state.
In the light of the crown princes visit, many Op-Ed columns are focusing on the Palestinian issue. The Krauthammers, Kristols, Wills, Kellys and Safires have been joined in chorus by many others such as Craig Hines, a Houston Chronicle columnist who has heaped attacks on the Kingdom using the most distorted and convoluted language.
Not only that but his knowledge of the area, based primarily on hearsay and unfounded rumor, made him parrot oft-repeated charges of fundamentalism and extremism.
Not to be outgunned, although from the other side of the fence, House Republican Majority whip, Tom DeLay, Republican-Sugarland, told the powerful pro-Israeli lobby on Tuesday that President Bushs doctrine of opposing regimes that support terrorism requires support for Israeli military actions in Palestinian cities.
If this is true then it is doubtful that Bush can ever strike a fair balance, as an honest broker or gain Arab allies in a wider war on terror. As Hassan Yassin, a columnist in this paper said, How do I define terrorism?
In addition, DeLay also suggested that Israel should remain in control of Palestinian-inhabited areas captured in previous wars and military actions.
Similar outcries by other Republicans, their eyes on the midterm elections have stiffened the resolve of Sen. John Kerry to speak out against those who criticize, even slightly, Sharons present policies on the West Bank.
Against the background of all these bellicose statements, irresponsible media advice by one-track minded columnists, it is important that the Bush administration study Crown Prince Abdullahs plan with the utmost care.
The crown prince has come to the US carrying a message of peace, said an American who is a long-time Gulf analyst. His words should be well-heeded. There may not be a second chance. I hope in the interest of world peace that they will be heeded.
Most likely the outcome will be that the Saudis will end up cutting out the US oil majors, and realigning themselves with their European and Asian customers. It will be interesting to see whether the foreign subsidiaries of companies like Exxon Mobil disassociate themselves from the American parent in an attempt to stay in business, as did the foreign subsidiaries of Arthur Andersen.
House of Saud can take refuge in their villas on the French Riviera, and hope Le Pen doesn't win and deport them.
Anyone who is still struggling with this question is a lost cause.
...THAT'LL be a first.
Pardon me for hoping the president dumps a load of horse manure on the prince's royal head.
I have heard this phrase many times during the past three weeks.
When has Abdullah or any other Arab ever done any "straight talking"?
"If a WMD is used in America, this happens 20 minutes later.
So tell your editors and mullahs to put this in their water pipes and smoke it."
"IOW, the future of the black moon-god rock is also on the table."
Matthew 7:26-27 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
...out of which side ?
let's hope W takes a page out of Rudy's playbook.
Of course this is what we should do.
Please. We've been hearing this crap for over 30 years and Arafat has yet to allow any peace plan to succeed.
The idea that the "crown prince" now has the words that must be listened to if we want peace...or we won't have a "second chance" is absolutely laughable.
MESSAGE TO ALL MUSLIM EXTREMISTS AND THEIR COHORT ARABS: SCREW YOU!
These people are really stuck, not recognizing the significance of 9-11: They will reap what they have sown. They have sown their seed to the wind, and they will reap the whirl-wind. As they deserve.
They really should get it. The peace makers will make peace alright, right over the dead bodies of their enemies. There is no second chance for them.
Bush has offered the Saudis a graceful way to get out of this mess. I don't believe that any of them are very happy about Arafat, but they were hemmed in and there was no way out. Now there is. Prince Abdullah will be the peacemaker, bringing tremendous prestige to his country and worldwide admiration. He will negotiate hard for the Palestinians and Sharon will negotiate hard for the Israelis. In the end there will be peace, Israel will be recognized by the Arab world, and, although there will be minor incidents, the prestige of the entire Arab world will rest on them getting it under control....and they will.
The only one who will not get any credit for this is Bush. But he will know, and so will we.
Well said.
Some REAL straight talk would include GW saying:
* 15 of the 19 9/11 murderers were Saudis
* Saudis are rewarding Palestinian suicide bombers' families with cash (which you probably got from US)
* Saudi National TV just did a 12-hour telethon to raise cash for the "liberation of Palestine".
* And last, but not least: "Abdullah, ol' buddy... you are definitely on our s#it list!!"
