Russia to hold military drills with China:1st time in more than 30 years

TAIPEI - China and Russia are planning to hold joint military exercises for the first time in more than 30 years, a report said yesterday.

The drills, which will take place sometime in August, will involve all three branches of the armed forces from both countries, according to a report on Taiwan's ETtoday.com website.

War games involving the Chinese and Russian armies will take place in north-eastern China, while their navies and air forces will conduct drills in the Yellow Sea.

The report said it showed that Sino-Russian military interaction, previously limited to arms purchases and mutual expressions of support on international issues, has since progressed to strategic cooperation.

Military exchanges between China and the former Soviet Union were suspended for more than three decades after ties soured in the 1960s due to ideological differences.

Separately, in Moscow, Russian Premier Mikhail Kasyanov told visiting Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan that high-level contacts between the two countries had been 'very frequent' and that these contacts would culminate with the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to China later this year for talks with Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

Mr Kasyanov said an upcoming meeting between the Russian and Chinese premiers would boost economic cooperation, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

Isnt it interesting, suddenly, their friends! Friendly enough to hold joint war games? My goodness with their combined military might they might be quite a handful! No one seems to think much of this development, nothing to worry about? They are our friends? Is that why we have nukes pointed at their little part of the world? This little article didnt mention the SU95's flying along our Alaskan border, recently, of course it was just a friendly reminder that their bombers are still just a stones throw away and we are still friends with the ruskies and red commies so dont think anytinhg of it!

Seems to me that the Russians are trying to decide which way to go - with the US or China. Top bidder, maybe? No, I think that the Russians will end up with the US - there's too much bad blood between them over the years, and I don't really think that they sold the ChiComs their top of the line stuff. Not like Clinton.

The Russians and the Chinese are not natural allies. Russia's population is declining, and it has continual friction with a number of the ex-USSR Muslim countries. China is growing in strength, and would like to reoccupy some of resource rich, sparsely populated Siberia. Isn't that obvious?

Yes, in the long term. In the short term an ambitious China could "rent" an air force and an amphibious task force from the Russians. Russia cannot maintain this equipment, or pay its troops, so why not rent them out?

This longshot is the only near-term way I see that Tawian needs to worry about an invasion from China.

Su95's? What are those? Tu95's flying backwards? Still, the US carries out regular reconaissance right around Russia and is now installed in Georgia, within a few tens of clicks of one of Russia's major command centres base in Sochi. The upgraded Baltics radar network is already integrated into NATO infrastructure and can be turned on at the flick of a switch to look deep into Russia.

My guess is that Russia is playing China against US. It could also serve as Russia's spying expedition to what China is up to. Especially about how China will conduct amphibious invasion of any kind.

So much for the naysayers that said the Sino-Russian alliance signed in July 2001 was disrupted and perhaps even 'killed' in the aftermath of 9-11 and following the formation of a new US "strategic partnership" with Russia in the war against terrorism. The Sino-Russian alliance is fast to progressing to a full-scale NATO-type military alliance between the most powerful nuclear superpower in the world and the most populous country in the world with the biggest army in the world. The US ought to take note of this new global peer-competitor.

We have held "joint war games" with all manner of countries friendly neutral, and hostile.

Let's see, on the Russian side, we have a military that doesn't get paid routinely. On the Chinese side, we have an army whose sense of operational art is to hope that they have more bodies than the enemy has bullets. Neither side has anything resembling a Navy, so their aspirations would be on the Eurasian mainland. However, one of China's aspirations is to regain Siberia, which they claim Russia stole from them.

They're TU-95s, and "recently" was three years ago, during Operation Allied Farce, when Bill Clinton was TRYING to PO the Russians.
