Senator Pete Dominici was on George H. W. Bush's "short list" for running mate in 1988. In fact, according to some accounts, he was the leading candidate for a while, and was passed over at the last minute because of health concerns due to the fact that he was a smoker. Dunno whether he still smokes, but it looks like the old boy has held up well.

I sometimes wonder whether the 1992 election might have been different had GHWB not had Quayle in the role of albatross around his neck. And I mean no disrespect to Quayle, but Bush the elder should have seen that Quayle would be widely perceived -- fairly or not -- as insufficiently experienced for the job at hand, much less for the Presidency should the unthinkable have occured.

BTW, have there been any Quayle sightings lately? He moved to Arizona, and then disappeared into a black hole, as far as I can tell.

Apologies for straying off topic, but seeing Dominici stirred some memories.

Thanks, rintense, for your efforts in providing pix of our Pres which typically the media ignores.

I like Pete Domenici, and I agree that elder Bush would have been better off with him. Dan Quayle always came across as the snot-nosed, yes-man kid. Maybe that was part of the media's fault, but personally I never liked the guy.
