HOUSE AFFIRMS NEED FOR SOUND SCIENCE AT EPA

Bill would create Deputy Administrator for Science and Technology

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The House today cast a resounding, bipartisan vote for strengthening the science behind environmental decisions at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by passing H.R. 64 by voice vote.

H.R. 64, the Strengthening Science at the EPA Act, would create a Deputy Administrator for Science and Technology at EPA. The new Deputy would be responsible for coordinating the scientific effort among EPA’s numerous offices and ensuring that sound science is the basis for regulatory decisions.

The legislation also would set a fixed five-year term for the EPA Assistant Administrator of the Office of Research and Development (ORD). The five-year term for the ORD head would provide for more continuity across administrations, enabling the individual to better focus on the science conducted at the Agency. In addition, H.R. 64 adds a new title to the ORD head - Chief Scientist.

Rep. Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), sponsor of the legislation and Chairman of the Environment, Technology, and Standards Subcommittee, said, “I am very pleased to see this bill passed. I believe it will be a big step forward in
ensuring the scientific accountability of EPA decisions.”(emphasis added)

“Congress often talks about the need for sound science at EPA,” said Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY). “I am happy to report that today the House put its money where its mouth is. This bill will go a long way to ensuring that decisions regarding environmental regulations are made based on the best science available.”

The bill now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Good idea and a tacit admission that past decisions have not always been based on sound science. Regardless of the five year term, the tone is set by the pres. We know how Clinton affected the CIA, FBI, EPA, HUD, etc., so this step is no guarantee that sound science will always be followed. Still, it is a start.

Which is exactly why every rat senator running for reelection in Bush country must be defeated this November.

Then, Shorty Mullah Da$$hole can be the minority party's token midget in charge of counting paper clips or trash cans on the Senate Floor.

Nothing will be done until the rat senators up for election in Bush country lose their elections, and Da$$hole become irrelevant!

All science should be "sound". It's hard to believe that a new position needs to be created to get "sound science" out of the EPA.

We are seeing the bad science effect from the left wingers pushing their agendas in medicine and other areas where mad/bad science should never be tolerated.

Bad science is used by Rat Lawyers to con juries into massive judgements based on bad science. Dr Dean Edell has been talking about bad medical science in the court rooms for close to a decade. It actually started happening in the 1970s when bad science and lawyers would make FDA take a drug off of the market so the manufacturer could be sued by the lawyers. Years later, real data and real science showed no problem more the normal incidence in the general population.

Mad/bad science is just another example of socialism combined with Rat trial lawyers and how they can harm society.

House Cleared Because of Potential Environmental Damage

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The House today was suddenly adjourned when Lynx hair and Spotted Owl droppings were discovered in a second floor men's room by visiting members of several environmental groups. HR 64 would have required that the EPA ensure qualified scientists review claims by environmentalists that certain species were being endangered by commercial activities before such activities could be banned.

Gretta Screechman, spokeswoman for the group Republicans: The Other White Meat, said that today's wildlife findings in the House prove that it sits on the site of several endangered species and that, accordingly, the building must be razed.

It is not known when, or if, the House will reconvene, Federal law requires the evacuation and closing of any building believed to be endangering any threatened species.

There was a long discussion of a different bill on the same topic here. While this bill appears to be better, I don't think adding yet another office will do anything to fix the mess at EPA. Accountability in government is a pipe dream. We need to privatize environmental verification.

You took the words right out of my mouth, as Meatloaf would say.

You're dating yourself ;)

It seems like if something makes sense, would be beneficial to the country (i.e., ANWR), it's been passed in the House, but might somehow benefit GW and the Repubs., then it's DOA. And he sounds so nice and reasonable on the talking head shows when he explains why he is holding this country hostage to his own ambitions. The guy makes me crazy with his shenanigans.

ensuring that sound science is the basis for regulatory decisions

This kind of stuff scares me. My mind is made up, why confuse me, even further, with facts?

The House today cast a resounding, bipartisan vote for strengthening the science behind environmental decisions at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by passing H.R. 64 by voice vote.

Do you see what's wrong here? Allow me to point it out. "by voice vote"

These sorry bastards we have in the Congress are so afraid of the people on both sides that they will continue to use the "voice vote" untill we castrate them or shoot them and put them out of our misery. It is so hard to even get a reply from the sorry buggers on this subject! They are the most conniving bunch of rascals I have seen in my life!
