Islamic terrorists are planning an attack against a U.S. nuclear power plant to coincide with the July 4 celebrations, U.S. intelligence sources say.

U.S. officials are taking the threat seriously, though they say it is not necessarily wholly reliable.

The claims of a plot were obtained by U.S. intelligence agencies last week. It coincides with other recent reports indicating that two al Qaeda terrorists are planning an attack inside the United States using radioactive material in a conventional bomb.

Zubaydah disclosed that an American and an African national were planning to construct a radiological bomb — a conventional bomb fortified with radioactive material to increase its lethality — for the attack, the officials said.

I like to speculate as much as the next guy, so... I speculate that the American (if this guy is telling the truth) is a Green extremist. He would probably figure bombing a nuclear plant would further their environmental concerns over nuclear power and create a backlash against the use of it.

Still, it all sounds a little dubious. One part of the article does scare me though- that bit about Middle Eastern types seen photographing and casing nuclear power plants. There was a thread several months ago about a couple of ME types who actually gained access to a nuclear power facility and were photographing it for a "school project". The local authorities and the FBI shrugged it off. We're off on wild goose chases with these color coded alerts but ignoring these small profile things. I think Ridge and Co. need to encourage Law Enforcement Agencies to investigate all these little incidents and when possible "shake down" the suspects. Even if they were doing something innocent, you'd still make the terrorists' mission a lot harder.

We're talking about a small number of terrorists, I'd guess. But they're using an established Muslim support network to operate. The Imam at the local Mosque doesn't have to know the guys sleeping in his basement are terrorists. If an American Muslim has a cousin visit him, he doesn't have to be part of the plot if that guy is al Qaeda. But that's how they're moving behind the scenes and operating within our borders. Using law abiding Muslims and Americans to unwittingly help them.

There really isn't enough protection at any of the nuclear power plants.

A couple of female Wackenhut security guards with M-16s are going to urinate on themselves if a van full of grenade throwing professional terrorists pull up and starts blasting.

We're in the same security position at the power plants as the airports pre 9-11, the illusion of security exists, while the fact is that these facilities are easy targets that can be attacked and taken over in multiple cities at the same time easily.

The Government would be well advised to permanently station a couple of platoons at each plant, but that would probably make too much sense.

That will only happen after the attacks.

Why Attack the power plants that do have guards. Hit the power grid itself, none of the distribution centers are guarded in in some cases there are no repair parts available. This would wipe out the electricity as we know it without firing a single shot...

If anything like this happens, say bye-bye to all Middle Eastern visas, say hello to rampant (and long-needed) profiling of Arabs by citizens (if not law enforcement), and expect that all Muslim organizations in America will come under unending scrutiny and suspicion.

Because it will mark the end of Muslim & Islamist fellow-traveler activity in America, I suspect they'd need to do something more impressive than an doomed-to-failure attack on a U.S. nuclear plant. Think of all the things that could go wrong.

They've only got one opportunity left, and I think they know it.

There are zero opportunities left. September 11 was a strategic disaster for militant Islam precisely because it was tactically way too successful, unifying us when the aim was to sow division.

Some terrorist leaders may know this. Whether enough do time will tell.

I will grant you that. Which leads me to believe that even a minor second attack (mall, bank, public gathering) will result in their utter demise, both in America and internationally.

They're not stupid, so we must assume they've dwelled on this most certain outcome.

Now that the threat has been revealed to the media and to the public, what are the chances that they terrorists would take the chance knowing that we are on to them? I feel that they will not take the chance and waste on opportunity when they know security will be high.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told reporters last month that U.S. military forces "control" Zubaydah and have provided him with medical care. Mr. Rumsfeld said April 3 that "we intend to get every single thing out of him to try to prevent terrorist acts in the future."

Can anybody educate me? Does truth serum really work, and if so, what are the odds Zubaydah is regularly hooked up to an IV? I've long felt that despite our denials, Zubaydah is probably being subjected to every interrogation technique known to man, short of taking him apart limb by limb.

Welcome to the 21st century.
If you could say the 20th was a battle between communism and freedom, the 21st will be a war between those that want to to live in the 11th and those who don't.
I hate to say this but another attack might be what we(the nation as a whole) need to realise that there's a war going on.

We WILL win. Failure is not an option.

Does truth serum really work

Short answer yes..and no. If I'm not mistaken what it does is lower your inhabitation(if that's the right word I'm looking for), not makes you more susceptible to your questioners inquires.
I'm sure there are others here that know more about this than I
