The real root of the problem is that we dismantled our intelligence
organizations in the field. Without specific foreknowledge
about these attacks, there isn't much that could have been done.

Heck, even Peggy Noonan (speechwriter for Reagan whose opinion pieces often
appear in The Wall Street Journal) looked like a psychic when she wrote (during the 2000
Presidential campaign) that people should vote for Dubya because we wanted someone like
him on the watch in case "a very bad thing" happens, perhaps in "lower Manhattan"
(if I recall the quotes correctly).

It's idiots like the Junior Senator from New York that continually underestimate the
general threat from enemies foreign and domestic.

(At times I would include the Senator in the later category, except she often
acts as though she is an example of alien intelligence.)
