CIA Warns of A 'Series of Explosions Using 'Low Charge' Nuclear Weapons'

Newsweek Cover: 'What Bush Knew' -- Phoenix FBI Agent Behind Warning About Arabs at Flight Schools is 'Superstar' Who Found Key Witness in Oklahoma City Bombing; CIA Warns of A 'Series of Explosions Using 'Low Charge' Nuclear Weapons' FBI Forced to Shut Down 10 to 20 Wiretaps of Qaeda-Related Suspects After A Judge Learned of AN Official Who was Misrepresenting Petitions for Taps of Terror Suspects Ashcroft Turned Down Request for Hundreds More Counterintelligence Agents; Treasury Not Hot on Money-Laundering Probes Between June and Sept. 11, As Many As 10-12 FAA Warnings Were Issued to All American Airlines, Major Airports; More Than Two Specifically Mentioned the Possibility of Planes Being Hijacked

According to the cover story by Senior Editor Michael Hirsh and Investigative Correspondent Michael Isikoff, it was back in July, 2001, that Bill Kurtz, a hard-driven supervisor in the FBI's Phoenix office, was overseeing an investigation at an Arizona flight school and Williams, a sharp, 41-year-old counterterror agent on his team, noticed something odd: a large number of Middle Eastern men were signing up to take courses in how to fly airplanes. The agent's suspicions were raised when he heard that some of the men at local Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University were also asking a lot of questions about airport security.

Kurtz, who had previously worked on the Osama bin Laden unit of the FBI's international terrorism section, was convinced he and his colleagues might have stumbled on a terrorist plot. "He thinks of everything in terms of bin Laden," one colleague recalled. Kurtz's team fired off a lengthy memo raising the possibility that bin Laden might be using U.S. flight schools to infiltrate the country's aviation system. The memo outlined a proposal for the FBI to monitor "civil aviation colleges/universities around the country."

But higher up the FBI ladder, Newsweek reports, an agent's warning is often likely to be dismissed as "chatter." And agents poke fun at the sometimes obsessive quirks of their colleagues. "If a confidential memorandum comes from a guy out in, say Phoenix, the first thing goes up line, 'That's Harry again. He's like a broken clock twice a day,'" one former agent says. Even today, long after 9-11, streams of new threats pass unnoticed through Washington. In recent weeks, for instance, the FBI has gotten specific threats about a car-or-truck bomb attack on an "all-glass" building near the U.S. Capitol, and another threat against a Celebrity cruise ship off Florida. Neither was corroborated or publicized, Hirsh and Isikoff report. Newsweek has also learned of a recent CIA warning of a "series of explosions using 'low charge' nuclear weapons."

Is Homeland Defense acting like a WMD is a possibility? Not really. Ridge is in Sept 10 denial with color swatches and all. Borders secure, hostile middle eastern illegals deported? No and no. Is Mr. Cheney acting like this is a possibility? Nope. He says the next attack is inevitable and there's not much to do.

Kind of a misleading title, considering only one sentance was devoted to it.

Your right, the guberment, despite all it’s posturing and chest beating, is still in snooze mode-pre 9/11. The American sheeple have rolled over and gone back to sleep or changed the channel to latest WWF or Nascar beer chugging event.

But just wait for the cries of outrage when someone pops off a nuke in downtown cornfield USA or a string of homicide bombers rocks the Northeast Corridor.

I don’t know who I am angrier at… the guberment of the stupid sheeple.

Homeland Defense isn't for making you safe, silly. It's for making you a slave.

I'm beginning to get the impression that:

Most Dems are socialists who want to destroy our country - even via Jihad, and,

The rest of our (conservative) leaders are just sitting back waiting for the other shoe to drop.... I mean, we're just pawns. We'll be sacrificed for the next catastrophic event. THEN, the conservatives will demand we drop this silly profiling garbage and get down to REAL solutions. (In the meantime, nothing substantive will happen.)

But of course the liberal/socialists will then scream to high heaven that racial/ethnic profiling be preserved.

I feel like I'm looking into the "LOOKING GLASS" like the Wizard of Oz!! If my hunch is right, a pox on BOTH their houses! My family means more to me than it does to them!

You'd think that one sentence about a low level nuclear device would have been expanded on a little bit. Why do they think that? It's irresponsible of the feds to give out information of that nature without follow-up and if they really think that, why hasn't the President addressed the nation about plans in the event of a nuclear attack? Something about that doesn't quite make sense, but maybe it's my wishful thinking.

I see the Bitch and Moan crowd is active tonight. Yeah, yeah, yeah, Bush, Ashcroft, Rumsfeld, Ridge, et. al. don't give a darn about security, they are all just going through the motions, if only all the loser armchair quarterbacks were in charge we'd be quite safe. And the B&M crowd probably is dumb enough to believe that dropping a bomb on Mecca will solve all the problems.

Inside the actual article(beyond what was reprinted above) is the framework for how the Dems plan to expand their smear of the administration to the next level. Innuendo on how actions by Ashcroft and Rumsfield were somehow deliberate attempts to ignore the threat of terrorism, thus making us weaker before 9/11. Isikoff is carrying the water for the Dems big time, but perhaps it will work given how many idiots here on the conservative side willingly lap it up.

I don't know who the bitch and moan crowd refers to, but I actually think the sentence about a low-level nuclear device doesn't make sense and is a way for the Newsweek authors to make people upset and think they aren't being leveled with. If we had actual intelligence that showed there was such a device in this country, I think there would be civil preparedness going on. As I said previously, perhaps that's just my wishful thinking.

Look, without being antagonistic or anything: WTF is the Gummint SUPPOSED to do? Take all the agents of the FBI and do a house-to-house for radiation hotspots? Check every garage in the country for fertilizer/ammonia loads?

The president doesn't talk to America about a nuclear disaster plan because...we don't have one.

Our leadership in DC has done quite well the last 8 1/2 months. In a free society, it's almost impossible to completely stop people who are suicidal and causing terror is their way to please Allah. There have been many arrests and retaining people since 9/11 and the administration has taken grief for this, but it appears to have stopped many potential attacks.
