My wife, who is the director of our church pre-school, pointed this article out to me last night, so I thought I would post it and get other's reactions.

She is bothered by the insistance on the part of certified teachers that non-certified teachers cannot do an adequate job of teaching pre-schoolers. The kids coming out of her school are far better prepared for kindergarten than those who attend the public pre-k classes because they teach them phonics, which is not done in the public system. It is not rocket science to teach these young children, and does not necessarily require a college degree.

BTW, I have participated in FR since '98, and this is my first time posting an article; I hope I did OK!

You did great!

I homeschool, and believe me, my twelve year old can teach my four year old what she needs to know! This is a power grab, pure and simple.

The NEA and feminists' goal is to put all kids in public school by age two or three, and it has to start somewhere.

Yes, private school IS better. I went to a private daycare/pre-K, and came out reading whole sentences (I was ready and a very intelligent child). My problem is that then I attended public school after that.

>>taught by certified teachers<<

Is there any evidence that this makes a difference? Or is even important?

Soon, they'll be extending pre-K to a two-year program, and then making the first year of college mandatory. (Actually, I've already read stories about making the college Frosh year 'available to everyone'.) Anything to justify controlling our children for more and more years, to get the tax revenues for having the kids attend, and to further the Left's agenda.

The official position of the NEA, repeated every summer in their resolutions, is that public education should begin at birth and include both child and parents.

I agree with your sentiments. In fact, I would argue that it is not necessary for teachers all the way up to the high school level to have college degrees. It's not rocket science to teach kids to read and write and most parents with a basic high school education are more than capable of teaching their own (or other) children. Of course, the teacher unions (who are also against homeschooling) would have you believe that schoolteachers are especially gifted and belong to an "elite" group. Not to disparage schoolteachers, but that is just not the case. Anybody with a basic education and a little patience with children can be a good teacher from Kindergarten all the way up to at least the 8th grade level.

I think the government needs to get OUT of pre-school. Let liensed private providers carry the load and get the money.

Good post! I love these articles where the teachers prove that they care little about the education of children and everything about the employment of teachers.

With "pre-kindergarten" and school breakfasts and "afterschool programs" and "midnight basketball," would parents have any role in parenting - other than breeding the kid?

To your remarks about NEA:
Many people do not know what is really happening in the NEA -- even teachers.

NEA and GLSEN Seek to Stifle Free Speech

They just want to tell you how to believe.
