Crashed Tu-154 cockpit found in Black Sea
Story Filed: Thursday, October 04, 2001 6:13 PM EST
NOVOROSSIJSK, Oct 04, 2001 (Itar-Tass via COMTEX) -- Rescuers found the cockpit of the crashed Tu-154 airliner in the Black Sea, according to head of the Novorossijsk naval rescue service Konstantin Ludchenko.
He told Tass the cockpit was found by the Sportis rescue boat, which tugged it to the "Kapitan Vakulov" freighter at 01:00 hours Moscow time on Friday. The crew of the freighter are now working to lift the cockpit onboard.
So far 11 bodies were found in the crash area. There were 78 people onboard the plane flying from Tel Aviv to Novosibirsk, including 15 Russians, 51 Israelis and 12 crew.
Russia sent numerous rescue vessels to the area and so far is rejecting Ukrainian assistance proposals.
Secretary of the Russian Security Council Vladimir Rushailo, who chairs the commission investigating the crash, arrived in Sochi on the Black Sea coast overnight and the commission is currently meeting right in the building of the local airport.

NBC news is reporting tonight that the US is sure it was a Ukranian SAM, with a range of up to about 250 miles, that was fired about four minutes before the plane blew up. ABC's story was a lot less sure about this. Who knows what the heck to believe.

Is that one of Israel's press agancies? And did the pic show the missile on a trajectory to hit the plane, or hitting the plane? I can't believe the Ukranians would be that sloppy with missiles in civilian air space. Could the Ukranians have taken out the plane on purpose? I could believe that a lot more easily than an accident. Could the plane have been hijacked?

Transcript of the black box voice recorder:
"Oh my God...it's a Ukraine Surface to Air Missle. It is going to blow us up. Thank goodness it is just an isolated accident and no other planes will be hit. I hope that the people in America just keep shopping and spending money."

Am I missing something on those specs? Looks like most of them do have a range well under 25 miles and the longest is only 300km, which is less than 250 miles.
To: HarryCaul
The SA-5 has a range of 300 km (186 miles) and the Tu 154 was within 150 miles of the Crimean coast.
I.e., within range.

Updated, thanks. It's always worth to plant a tree. Even if it looks like the world will end before it will bear fruit.
