In Bid to Unseat Clinton, Challenger Reaches Out to Rally the National G.O.P. (Spencer)

By PATRICK HEALY Published: April 4, 2006

WASHINGTON, April 3 — John Spencer, the former Yonkers mayor running against Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, is planning a 30-state fund-raising drive to try to rally the national Republican Party to defeat her re-election bid this year, and has already secured support from some prominent conservatives.

In letters sent last month to more than 200 members of Congress and 13 possible presidential candidates for 2008, Mr. Spencer's national fund-raising consultant wrote that Mrs. Clinton was on a "presidential march" toward a bid for the White House in 2008, and that the party needed a strategy to stop her: ideally, for the Spencer camp, spending to derail her in New York this year.

Even though Mr. Spencer is still competing for the Republican Party's nomination against another candidate, Kathleen Troia McFarland, a former spokeswoman in the Reagan Pentagon, some conservatives have signaled early support for him.

They include Senator George Allen, a Virginia Republican who is seen as a possible presidential candidate, and Representative Tom Feeney, a Florida Republican who is chairman of the House Conservatives Fund, a political action committee, according to aides to all three men.

Mr. Spencer intends to map out his political strategy and finance plan during private meals with Republicans at a hotel here on Thursday. His fund-raising consultant, Patrick Donohue, said that he was trying to get representatives of possible Republican contenders for the White House, including Senator John McCain of Arizona and the Senate majority leader, Bill Frist, of Tennessee.

Representative Feeney, meanwhile, has agreed to be a co-host at the lunchtime meeting. "The congressman was impressed by John's ability to get elected mayor twice in a Democrat-heavy city, and by his straight-talking and independent manner," said Jason C. Roe, Mr. Feeney's chief of staff.

I hope there is no infighting in the GOP over this. We all need to settle on one person...support them...and blast Hillary back to hell.

K.T. McFarland is an idiot. Every time she opens her mouth she makes a fool of herself. She has no political talents.

Spencer was a great mayor of Yonkers, which happens to be one of Westchester's few disaster areas. He has plenty of political experience and executive talent. If Pataki weren't trying to ensure that no one pops up who can challenge his political clout in the state--obviously a pointless exercise, since he is now washed up anyway--Spencer would be the obvious candidate.

I don't know what Spencer's views on abortion are, but otherwise he reminds me of Brett Schundler in New Jersey, a great candidate who was stupidly undermined by the RINO faction in the RNC.

Let's go with Spencer.

Why is it that the same RNC powerbrokers who say that a popular congressman with the people's support can't take the whitehouse with 2 years prep time...but a republican on a fools errand in one of the most left-leaning states in the union can unseat Hillary?

This candidate sounds like he may be a good challenger.

If he gets the GOP nod, my only question is:

"where do I send my check and how much can I send"?

Yeah....and Cuomo was a shoo-in over Pataki, right??

With a defeatist attitude Spencer can not win. With a positive attitude he can!!

Now what's your excuse for not backing John Spencer, Mr. Hannity?

John Spencer looks like a very impressive candidate against the Ice Queen. He is conservative, fearless, and takes no prisoners. He won't be cowed by her intimidation tactics and the prospect of being an underdog.

Now, if only the State and National GOP would fall in line behind him instead of just looking for some PC sacrificial lamb like McFarland who won't make them look too bad as they push a sure loser (McFarland).

This could be the great surprise upset victory of 2006! (but, I don't for the hapless NY and National GOP to recognize it, much less take take advantage it)

>> I don't know what Spencer's views on abortion are <<

Spencer is pro-life, and therefore UNELECTABLE according to the NY RINO club. Being pro-abortion in every circumstance magically makes you "electable" in NY, hense we are treated to jokes like Jeanine Pirro and K.T. McFarland. Maybe the RINO will find an "electable" pro-abortion homeless guy next. Being Hillary-lite is the key to "beating Hillary"!

I'm not persuaded. Mario Cuomo was defeated for two reasons, I think. Once was the exploding budget, but the other was the distinct impression everyone had at the time that Pataki was a conservative, a budget cutter, and maybe even a pro-lifer.

Being pro-abort does Republicans no good anyway, because you know all the fanatic pro-aborts will vote for hillary anyway.

But even in New York, being known, let's say, as a moderate pro-lifer (whatever that means) won't really turn off the voters. Blacks are not necessarily pro-abortion, although their "leaders" are. Same with Hispanics.

Yonkers has plenty of blacks and low income families, yet Spencer seems to have done well enough there. The same with Brett Schundler in New Jersey while he was mayor. If the Republicans would reach over the heads of bogus black and hispanic leaders and run on platforms of moral decency, they could do very well.
