Where the hell is Bush on this?

The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Bush Sr. had the same silence on issues during his election battle with Bill Clinton. Every fallacious issue with which the Democrats excoriated Bush Sr. was met thunderously with the sound of crickets. It was then, as now, horribly frustrating.

but he has always supported the war and the military, and for that reason alone he would be head and shoulders above ANY democrat who will run. I agree with that sentiment. When I was in high school, I was required to read "When Hell Was in Session" by Jeremiah Denton. He was my state senator at the time. What those prisoners of war went through was so brutal. My respect for McCain and for the other POW's is high. McCain does not always have right thinking judgement, but you can't diminish his support of the military.

In closing, I’d like to bring to your attention the gallantry and patriotism of one American who served with distinction in Iraq, a Navy SEAL, who refuses to quit his mission and let the country he loves so well suffer the terrible harm our defeat would entail.

A few days ago, Petty Officer First Class Mark Robbins’unit was ambushed outside Baghdad. During the ensuing firefight, he spotted an insurgent with an RPG, and immediately stepped out from cover and exposed himself to enemy fire to take out the terrorist before he could fire.

He saved the lives of his comrades, but was gravely wounded as he did so. He was shot in the eye by another insurgent with an AK-47. The bullet exited the back of his head about three inches behind his ear. He was initially knocked unconscious but came to, continued to fight and then, despite the severity of his wound, walked to the evacuation helicopter.

He was eventually taken to Landstuhl military hospital in Germany. As is the custom of Navy SEALs, he was accompanied by one of his comrades, Petty Officer Second class McLean Swink.

On our way home from Iraq, our delegation stopped in Germany for refueling and crew rest, and I had the privilege of visiting some of our wounded at Landstuhl. I briefly stopped in Mark Robbins’ room, but he was sedated and unable then to communicate.

I spent a few moments there, and talked to his buddy, before I went to visit other wounded soldiers. Not too long after I had left Mark’s room, Petty Officer Swink found me and told me Mark was awake and had asked to see me. So I returned.

When I entered his room and approached his bedside, he struggled with great difficulty to sit up, stiffened his body as if he were trying to stand at attention, grasped my hand tightly and wouldn’t let go. And then he whispered to me not to worry, ‘We can win this fight. We can win this fight.’

Mark, as another person observed, looks like the ‘toughest kid on the high school football team.’ He is tough, and brave, and very young. But more than that, he’s an inspiration to those who are only called upon to subordinate a temporary political advantage to the security of our good and great nation.

Petty Officer Mark Robbins, an American hero, believes we can still win this fight. I’ll take his word for it, and accept my responsibility to help the cause he sacrificed so much to defend. Thank you.

This is the sort of things Bush and others should have been out saying in front of cameras for a long time now.

No doubt about it, the nation has slid to a point where only a tremendous leader, or the inevitable massive terrorist strike that will come as a result of weak leadership, has any chance of rallying the US to finally deal with Islamic radicalism. Nevertheless, I do appreciate McCain's comments; and they may impact my post-Primary voting- should John get that far.

However, I'm afraid that the country is at present too weak to support politicians with the moxie and insight necessary to do the the really difficult things that are so distasteful to- IMHO- an overfed, underthinking populace. I don't like Rudy, John, or Mitt; and I detest Hilary, Obama, and Rats in general. But I can't honestly blame any of them for being front-runners in the election process of a largely spoiled, disinterested nation.

Concurring bump. I’m no McCain fan, but he has put his MSM boosters in a bind — they can’t ignore him now without looking like the total jerks they are.

Well. Color me surprised. Especially at this: If the terrorists are willing to do this terrible thing to Iraqi children, what are they willing to do to our children? No other politician has dared say this.

[Article, quoting John McCain] "If the terrorists are willing to do this terrible thing to Iraqi children, what are they willing to do to our children?"

The DemocRATS need to think long and hard on that one.

Actually, they don't -- the word is already in, from Beslan.

Vladimir Putin likes to assassinate journalists and imprison businessmen and politicians. But as Churchill said about supporting Stalin against Hitler, you'd have to give the Devil at least a favorable mention in Commons, if Hitler invaded Hell. I'd support Putin to the hilt against the animals that did those kids in Beslan.

“and has fought to break up media companies (conservatives generally believe shareholders (owners) should be the ones to determine what happens with their money).”

I do NOT know the details on exactly what McCain wants to do with media companies, but conservatives (and anyone not wanting a monopoly on dissemination of opinion through the media outlets) should be VERY concerned about the concentration of our print, Tv, and radio media in the hands of an increasingly few conglomerates. Cries about the ‘MSM’ are in fact referring to about 5 companies (GE, NYT, Disney, Viacom, and Time Warner), with a couple of other newspapers thrown in WSJ/DJ, and the owners of the washington post.

We all can print up something on the net, on a piece of paper, or stand in town square and say whatever we want, BUT just a few companies control the single most effective method of delivering goodfacts to citizens. I don’t claim to have a solution but it is a very troubling situation.

Kind of makes you understand what the founders were doing when they set up a constitutional republic, not a democracy, with only stakeholders voting.

Opinion Journal has an article on it on the Wed. page on-line. I think Jonah Goldberg wrote about it too. My problem with McCain is that the only thing that I think he can be trusted on, is national security. He’s bad on taxes, he helped write the campaign finance bill and he’s terrible on immigration. Look, I have differences of oppinion with McCain, however the rips he takes for his off the cuff statements that are played up by the liberal press by and large are not warranted, his conservative voting record lifetime is over 80%.

McCain took hits for criticizing Rumsfeld and the Bush execution of the war from a lot of people, especially on the right hand side. Historically though, he’s probably likely to be proven right on many of those criticisms. The press of course spun thos criticisms as though McCain were siding with the Dems.. which of course he wasn’t.

I don’t agree with McCain on many things, but he does get a far worse rap, particularly among some groups, than he deserves.

Lifetime voting record 80%+ conservative.... That’s not something to ignore. No matter what statement the press has latched on from his mouth to portray things differently.
