Carlton A. Sherwood, an investigative journalist and former Marine who lurched between accolades and controversy, most prominently with a 2004 film about the chagrin of Vietnam War veterans over John Kerry’s turning against the war as a naval officer, died on June 11 in Philadelphia. He was 67. The cause was congestive heart failure, his wife, Susan, said Friday. The Sinclair Broadcasting Group, the nation’s largest owner of local television stations, planned to show Mr. Sherwood’s film shortly before the 2004 election...(but)

A federal judge dismissed a filmmaker's defamation lawsuit against Sen. John Kerry, saying remarks linked to Kerry's campaign during the heat of the 2004 presidential race amount to political opinions. Filmmaker Carlton Sherwood sued Kerry and John Podesta, an aide who ran the Massachusetts Democrat's campaign in Pennsylvania. Sherwood accused them of blocking the release of his documentary about Kerry's anti-Vietnam War activities by labeling Sherwood a "disgraced journalist" and a "Bush hack." The Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. canceled plans to air the documentary "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" on its stations before the November 2004 election. U.S. District...

PHILADELPHIA --Several Vietnam War veterans who sued over a documentary about Sen. John Kerry's anti-war activities have dropped their libel suits, leaving just one lawsuit pending over the controversial 2004 film. Filmmaker Carlton Sherwood says the outcome shows the suits were frivolous complaints filed by Kerry operatives to try to block the film's release in the final weeks of the presidential race. "We've always believed that Kerry controlled these lawsuits," Sherwood said Monday. He said the suits were dropped as depositions got under way. "We also felt we were getting a tad too close to the truth about Kerry."

A controversial documentary titled Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal, about Sen. John F. Kerry’s anti-Vietnam War activities in the 1970s that was released just before the 2004 presidential election sparked at least five politically charged lawsuits. Now there’s only one. In recent weeks, lawyers for the plaintiffs have dropped three libel suits brought by anti-war veterans who said they were falsely portrayed in the film made by journalist Carlton Sherwood. Sherwood was also hit with a copyright infringement suit in New York that accused him of unfairly including clips from another film and photos from a book. But that...

When Senator John F. Kerry set up a legal defense fund last month to fight a civil suit charging him with conspiracy and defamation, he called it the "Fund for Truth and Honor." The name seems to tweak the title of "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal," a 2004 documentary that criticized Mr. Kerry for his activities in the early 1970's in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. Carlton Sherwood, the journalist and Marine veteran who produced the film, and the Vietnam Veterans Legacy Foundation filed the lawsuit in October in federal court in Philadelphia. The suit accuses Mr. Kerry and...

John Kerry appears to be in a bit of legal hot water. The Massachusetts senator and last year's Democrat presidential nominee was sued in Philadelphia last week for alleged defamation, conspiracy and interference with contractual relations. The lawsuit's plaintiff is award-winning journalist Carlton Sherwood, who contends his anti-Kerry documentary "Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal" was torpedoed last year by Kerry and other top Dems. The Philadelphia Daily News reported the lawsuit alleges that Kerry, during last year's presidential campaign, directed the Democratic National Committee to label Sherwood as "an extreme right-wing activist." This directive supposedly was given just before...

John O’Neill Houston, Texas Dear Friend, Last year, when my fellow Swift Boat veterans and I spoke out about John Kerry, you rallied to our side. We will never forget your faith in our cause and your belief in our honesty. It made all the difference. Together we made history. Like most of you, I believed our mission was over. We could all move on with our lives, return to our families and homes secure in the knowledge we had done the right thing for America, and for our children’s future. Regrettably, that has not been the case for a...

Gitmo Prisoners Are Right Where They Belong by Carlton Sherwood Posted Jul 22, 2005 The call from the Pentagon couldn't have been more timely. Just days after London suffered its worst attack on civilians since the Nazi "Blitz",  clearance to tour the military's Camp Delta prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where 518 "high value" terrorists are being held, had finally come through. The purpose of the trip was to determine if the so-called "detainees" at Guantanamo are being treated humanely, or whether the accusations leveled by a growing chorus of press, international human rights organizations and even some members of...

Carlton SherwoodDear Friend:Last year, when John Kerry was running for the Presidency, I wrote and produced the documentary, Stolen Honor: Wounds that Never Heal. I am proud to say I was one of many Vietnam combat veterans who stood up to expose Kerry's betrayal of all those who served in Vietnam -- particularly our POWs still being held by the Communists in 1971. That's when Kerry testified before the U.S. Senate that American troops were murdering hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese civilians, and that such atrocities were authorized and approved by the entire U.S. military chain of command. The election is...

From John O'Neill: The November election is long past, but I want to tell you about some unfinished and urgent business with which I would like your help. When my fellow Swift Boat veterans and I made our ads to expose John Kerry’s record with respect to Vietnam during the presidential campaign, we were not alone in our mission. A number of veterans who had spent time in North Vietnam prison camps were eager to tell the American people about how John Kerry’s anti-war activities had affected their treatment. The two groups of veterans worked together as the Swift Boat...
