Los Angeles The image of American Muslims is in serious disrepair. A January 2010 Gallup poll found that almost half of Americans hold an unfavorable view of Islam. About the same number of Americans harbor personal prejudice toward Muslims, ..
These numbers become especially troubling when we consider that two-thirds of the Americans polled admit to knowing little to nothing about Islam.
Why are many Americans distrustful of a religion and people they know very little about?
People tend to fear what they do not understand. Americans, for the most part, have been brought up in a Christian society. They might not agree with it, but they are familiar with it and thus tend not to feel threatened by it.
Because Islam is still a minority religion in America and has had little positive public exposure, Americans have built up a strong distrust of it.
Islam deserves a media makeover. At a time when the United States is mired in two wars ..
The behavior of some radical self-proclaimed Muslims does not help public perception. Each time a terrorist commits a suicide bombing in a hospital, or a religious cleric issues a fatwa against Mickey Mouse, or Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust after 9/11, another American grows weary of Islam and Muslims.
Those familiar with Islam understand that these acts are not representative of the religion and shouldnt be associated with mainstream Islam. The rest of the US does not.
Reporting the acts of a handful of radical Muslims as if they are accurate portrayals of Islam would be akin to intimating that every priest involved in a scandal accurately represented Roman Catholicism.
The behavior of ideologues who capitalize on ratings or attention from fueling the fire against Islam does not help US public perception, either.

A fairer statement may be that Muslims do not understand their own religion and the Koran and how it has been hijacked by radicals who do believe in carrying out its more radical offerings.
If ya don't like getting smeared by poop, then get out of the cesspool ..
btw.. Amjad Mahmood Khan, a former editor in chief of the Harvard Human Rights Journal, is an American Muslim attorney in Los Angeles.
They don’t scare me, they nauseate me.
ISLAM = evil. Started by a child molester that eventually killed him for his evil.
I am actually happy a large percentage still can tell the difference between good and evil.
>>Why are many Americans distrustful of a religion and people they know very little about?
LOL!
They know pretty much enough about it and hence are distrustful.
Even the ones that are not blowing stuff up have freakishly bizarre ideas and rituals going on. Screw em.
a foreign looking couple passed me on the way out of a supermarket the other day. The woman was wearing a hijab.
They smiled, said hello, and did not explode. I’m cool with that.

Truth is 98% of us were too ignorant of Islam to have an opinion either way before 9/11/2001
Let's see, they eagerly sacrifice their children .... something even a wild pig wouldn't contemplate.
They eagerly kill innocents to further their goals .... all to ensure that no one else has any more freedom than they have.
They have no issue with killing children, the helpless or the infirm .... in fact, these are their preferred targets
They see no problem with gang rape, or 'marriage' of girls under the age of 10.
And they want to kill us .... so what's else is there to know?
They don’t scare me - they piss me off.
“”Each time a terrorist commits a suicide bombing in a hospital, or a religious cleric issues a fatwa against Mickey Mouse, or Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad denies the Holocaust after 9/11, another American grows weary of Islam and Muslims.””
OR when they highjack and fly buildings into US cities and fields killing thousands?
There’s just a boatload of them out there proclaiming they don’t agree with the actions of the fanatics, isn’t there?
We tend to fear what we don’t understand? Gee! What a profound and well thought out statement. Kinda overused, don’t you think?
“”Truth is 98% of us were too ignorant of Islam to have an opinion either way before 9/11/2001””
Remember they attacked us because we hated them. Who ever gave them a thought before that? I remember over 20 years ago when the old USSR was having troubles with the influx of Muslims and I thought - can’t happen, the world won’t allow it! Wrong again!
What a pack of lies.
The Quran itself says:
Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits, for Allah does not love transgressors. 2:190
And slay them (the infidels) wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out, for tumult and oppression are worse than slaughter 2:191
And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and Faith in Allah; but if they cease, let there be no hostility except to those who practise oppression. 2:193
Fighting is prescribed for you, and you dislike it. But it is possible that you dislike a thing which is good for you, and that you love a thing which is bad for you. But Allah knows, and you know not 2:216
I wonder what all the former muslims who have turned to Christianity that have gotten their eyes carved out of their heads, had finger removed, had their children killed in front of them because they turned away from Islam feel about that article.
Eff Islam. I wear my American Infidel shirt every chance I get. I love the looks I receive from both fellow infidels and Muzzies alike.
I keep hearing Muslim apologists claim that they are mischaracterized as a religion of radical jihadists. Some have given a figure that no more than 10% minority are radical jihadists.
But given the one billion Muslims, that means around 100 million want to either behead me or allow me to live as their slave.
Name another religion that has that radical fringe with those ideas.
In France they hold up buildings. I’m not kidding. You see them all over Paris leaning on buildings. Without them the old Parisian buildings would surely tumble down. They help keep things up. They also sit in Arab bars/cafés with nothing in front of them for hours each day. They don’t play cards or read, just sit. It makes the café look full. So you see, there is a good side to Muslims.
Let them start “imposing their morality” by stoning “gays” and forbidding abortion and I will probably say the same thing.
Mohammed was a devil and so are his followers. Islam is a tool of Satan.
Well said. If they don’t want us to be afraid of them then they should stop trying to destroy our country and our allies and fer God sake quit tryin to lop our heads off.
